No application icons in panel of new install of openSuse 12.2/KDE

Just installed 12.2 64-bit, replacing 11.4 32-bit, with KDE on an older HP desktop with AMD processor. Everything went well (if slowly, it’s an older CD drive). Upon opening the first applications (Firefox, LibereOffice) I noticed that the panel showed no icon for them. The system icons are present, with the digital clock occupying most of the width. This is odd to me because the same CD installed the same version (12.2) on two other machines that defaulted to showing app icons in the panel (which is unlocked).
Can’t find any reference to dis/allowing icons in the panel under Configure the Desktop.
Suggestions solicited, with thanks.

With widgets unlocked
Delete the Panel (I know… but it’s OK)

Now add a Panel > Default Panel

To be clear, the Panel > Default Panel is in the right-click menu on the desktop.
Did it, problem solved.
Thanks
