Having just switched from HTML to NNTP I’ve noticed that mine (and
other’s) posts via NNTP make no appearance in the Activity Stream' under the HTML version of the forum's
What’s New’. I can wait for 10
minutes, 30 minutes, or an hour, and they never appear. Presumably this
is a bug. I’d be surprised however if I’m the first person to report
this!

You are the first person to report this. Thanks for doing so - I may
have some time in the coming weeks to see if there’s something the
gateway isn’t providing - probably won’t be a high priority as I’m
attending BrainShare next week and expect to be busy all week, then have
to catch up on a couple of projects I’m committed to.
But I’ve made a note of it in my tracker.

yes thanks…and, maybe this is why … well it is kinda hard to
explain: it seems sometimes i answer and then hours/days later someone
else answers via http and suddenly the OP is back…i’m wondering,
maybe if the http ‘activity stream’ is not being activated by an nttp
post, then maybe the OP ‘subscribed’ to the thread is not getting
emailed that there is an (nntp) answer waiting…
just saying…

Could be, if the same trigger that causes the activity stream to be
updated also triggers the subscription.

Pleasure. I think it’s reasonably important to know this for OPs who are
asking for help, who then click on `What’s New’ all time no knowing that
that question has already been answered!

Good luck with BrainShare!

Makes sense.
Quite often I notice that people do not notice that I replied, and some
times I have to repeat the same two or three times till I get their
attention.
I thought that it could be because of the sorting of posts, that mine
via nntp appeared earlier in the list, and http users only look at the
bottom, where they expect new posts.

Thinking I should look and see if the default is a flat view or the
threaded view - I find that some users of web forums are very used to the
flat view (as opposed to replies to messages, you reply to a thread), and
that might explain it as well.
That might also explain why some people think support on Facebook is a
viable alternative.

judging only from the way i see so many answer an older post by replying
to the last post, i’d say the flat view is the default view…which
(imHo) is bass ackwards…

exactly.

oh! it is hard enough to search/find previous nuggets in these fora
(well, the vBulletin search engine is very inferior to using google with
a site specifier) but i think trying to find even a two month old ‘fix’
in FB might be impossible…
at least my experience is even the good stuff scrolls off into
never-never-land pretty darn quick.

Well, I share that opinion, but I know people who use web forums who seem
to prefer that view. <shrug>

Yeah, that’s my experience as well - it’s too ephemeral for anything to
be searched for, so I (and a few others) redirect people over here.

It is the only sensible way, I’m afraid (flat mode).
I no web-forum user, you know that, but if you follow a subject in
threaded mode via web, there is no way to know which posts are new and
which you already read.
Thus you have to display in flat mode and assume that all the posts
below someone are new, all above are old.
If the forum software had a manner to tags messages as you read them,
the threaded mode would be useful. It surprises me that a communication
mode that has so many users (forums) doesn’t have some method to better
track the posts actually read.
On the other hand, via nntp we can keep track of what individual posts
we have read.

Never tried Facebook, and not keen in trying.

Apart from the date/timestamp, you mean?
Linear mode doesn’t really give you an easy way to see new posts either
unless you remember when you last visited (just checked myself, and I’m
not seeing any indicator - but if there is, let me know what it is so I
don’t miss it the next time I look).

I don’t know here, but on other places I refresh the already opened web
page and I see a lot of text being printed below my current position.
Or if I got a post with a link, it points already to the point I should
read.
Or you do remember the last post you read, and continue reading from
that point.
