Nikon D5100

I am looking at buying a Nikon D5100 camera, I note that it has dcraw support, and PTP mode support for USB Details for: Nikon Corp. D5100 (PTP mode)
Can anyone offer further information on Linux support for this camera? Thanks.

I’m not familiar with that particular model, but my Nikon D50 works
perfectly with Digikam etc. I either connect the camera via USB in PTP
mode, or, more often, remove the card and pop it into the card reader
slot on my machine. Both methods work well.

My system is openSUSE 11.4 64-bit, Kernel 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop, KDE
4.7.2 Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz, 8GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 9600GT

G’day dvhenry, nice camera.
I have a Nikon D70 and Nikon D700. I remove the memory cards from the camera and use a card reader and I have no problems with digicam.
The D70 worked with digikam when I plugged in in via usb, but I just found it easier to remove the card as I tend to recharge the camera battery at the same time. Just for kicks, I plugged the D700 after reading your post. digikam crashed for some reason when attempting to import from the camera (but worked fine with the card reader). I don’t know why this happened.
I am running
OS: Linux 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop x86_64
System: openSUSE 11.4 (x86_64)
KDE: 4.7.2 (4.7.2) “release 9”
digiKam 2.2.0
I hope this helps

Thanks to both of you for your replies, I have since ordered the camera as I have so far found no serious negatives when checking for support, and when it arrives, and I have had a chance to test its Linux compatibility and any limitations I may find I will post back, again, thanks.
