Hi,
I have a nikon coolpix the product id is 04b0:016d Nikon Corp. I go under digiKam/KDE3 I go to import camera I select Nikon Coolpix S500 (PTP Mode) it than tells me can not find camera retry? My camera is a coolpix s550 linux version is Linux 2.6.27.23-0.1-default x86_64 openSUSE 11.1 (x86_64) thank you ahead of time
And are you actually running kde3?
Also, what happens try to browse the device with Konqueror?
4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) “release 4.10.4” Where in konqueror I typed / to get to the root directory but where do I go from there?
S550 doesn’t seem to be in the gphoto database yet. Instead of trying to add the closest model number, just add a generic PTP camera and give it the name Nikon Coolpix S550. I have done this before with cameras that have PTP mode but are not yet listed.
PS: I don’t know if you have to do something on the camera to select PTP mode.
PPS: PTP mode is superior to storage device mode, you can even do things like command some cameras to take pictures from the computer.
unsuccessful I get the same error I don’t think kde is reading that the camera is installed it does not show up in my device notifier like my usb drive stick or my Olympus
Plug in the camera and then do dmesg and look to see if a new USB device was detected.
Sometimes you have to use the mfr supplied cable, it may differ subtly from a generic USB to mini-USB cable.
Again double check the manual to see if there is anything you have to do on the camera side to announce it to the computer.
I did a dmesg the camera was located

I am using the mf cable and the only instructions is that you have to push the power key on the camera. I use this camera with windows vista and xp all the time
What about other digital cameras, are you able to access them in digikam? Have you installed all the updates to 11.1? Maybe there’s an update that affects access in digikam.
I’m sure there’s an explanation why you can’t access the camera but I find it puzzling. I have a Coolpix too but not your model and it works fine. BTW, it will not appear in the notifier, this is different from older openSUSE versions, but it will work in digikam once registered. Try autodetect in digikam.
haha thanks I did not even see the auto detect worked like a charm it put is as a USB PTP Class camera thank you again
Excellent. I should have noticed sooner that you were expecting it to appear in the notifier. It doesn’t these days. I don’t know if this is something missing in KDE4 or is the new policy or what.
I have a similar issue. I HAD been able to download photos from TWO different digital cameras into Digikam, but after a kernel update I now cannot. dmesg shows the camera(s), but Digikam says that I have:
“Failed to connect to the camera. Please make sure it is connected properly and turned on. Would you like to try again?” .
This is also happening with an apparent lack of audio driver for phonon, I do not know if they are related. Thanks in advance.
