nic

hi, i am using opensuse11 as a router. But suddenly one of my ethernet card is not working. preveously it was working fine.card is realtek 8139 but now the system is detecting it as zonet zen3200(manufacture is same realtek). Now i am not able to configure it because the edit option is desabled, but i can add new one. I can edit the settings of the other card which is eth0. Any solution. thanks in advance…

Edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and delete the relevant entry, then restart the machine and try to detect and reconfigure the NIC. If that doesn’t work, replace the NIC. Those 8139s are cheap as chips and mediocre quality so it’s not surprising if one fails.

could he be caught with a kernel update problem? (and the new kernel
isn’t loading the correct driver module?)

Depends on what he meant by suddenly. Also he didn’t say if it was 11.0, 11.1 or 11.2.

But one reason the mfr may have changed is the PCI identifier changed, and this could mean a hardware failure as the NIC stores this in its ROM.
