Just finished installing openSUSE 11.1 x64 on my desktop and now I cannot see the on-board NIC adapter in either openSUSE or in Windows Vista.
The integrated network controller is on a Gigabyte motherboard. After I had no luck in openSUSE getting it configured (the wireless card is working perfectly), I booted into Vista to check the settings (it’s been working on Vista for a few months now, since I got the machine). The on-board ethernet card has disappeared from the Device Manager, but the wireless card is still available and still works.
I tried disabling it in the BIOS, rebooted, re-enabled it, and it still won’t show up. There is an orange LED which flashes periodically at the ethernet port.
If anyone has any ideas to troubleshoot the problem (I’d like to get everything working in BOTH openSUSE and in Vista) please let me know.
I can post specifics about the desktop if needed. Thanks all for the help.
Thank you very much for the link… I have the same Gigabyte GA EX58 UD3R SLI motherboard and Core i7 920 CPU. Everything was working perfectly under Vista Home Premium 64 before I tried to dual-boot openSUSE (no, I don’t blame Linux for the problems, these things just happen sometimes).
I am going to shut down all power to the system and unplug it. Hopefully this will work.
I unplugged the computer from the wall outlet and flipped the switch on the PSU. Waited a few hours (went to bed) and plugged it in again today. Sure enough, the on-board NIC works in Vista as it did before.
Now it’s time to get it set up correctly in openSUSE. I remember it being much easier when I installed 10.0 on my laptop, as it autodetected everything correctly. I’ll keep tinkering and hopefully the next post here will be from my Linux partition.
Very annoying hardware design with this motherboard. Almost every time I reboot the computer to switch OS’s, the on-board LAN goes dead. Each time this happens, I have to unplug the entire machine and cold-boot.
If anyone has any brilliant ideas regarding this Gigabyte GA EX58 UD3R SLI mobo, please let me know. I’m extremely happy with everything about my desktop, except for this buggy motherboard! >:(

Does the BIOS have a “Wake On Lan” setting for this device? If so, set
it on. For some devices when this is not set, Windows can turn the
device off in such a way that the Linux driver cannot get it started.
