AFAIK, it is not advisable. That was a goal of the driver development team a couple of years ago, I don’t know if that is still in the plan. My understanding is that, while the driver is stable for read/write, there are features missing that you would definitely want. In particular, the driver does not support journaling, so there is risk to the integrity of the file system. Ext3 is native to Linux; that’s the way you want to go. Perfectly OK to use ntfs on a static data partition shared with Windows, or to access the Windows partitions from within Linux. (Your question asked installing on a ntfs hard drive; the file system is at the partition, not the drive, level; you can have mixed ext3 and ntfs partitions on the same drive)
