NewsGroup Reader

Hello All,

Im after a good newgroups reader please. Web based would be preferable, if not GUI one is just fine. I’ve came across PAN but just wondering if there are any other good ones?

thanks ;)

I’m using Thunderbird (plus leafnode), I find its feature set most complete (there are still things
I miss). I have also used claws and pan. I have tried also plain text clients, I think it was tin,
but… I find their interfaces awkward (although I’m very comfortable using Pine for email).

It depends on what you want to use it for.

knode is OK to just read, reply etc to messages
nzb is fine for downloading

Both can be found in the repos.

define “good”

i use Thunderbird now, in the past i’ve used pan, knode and some
others…(best every was NeologicNews but, it has sadly died off)

i’ve used Thunderbird for four or five years because i also use it for
email, usenet and a closed forum that has an nntp entry point…so, i
get a common “user experience” for most of the text work i do…(of
course, most nntp readers can also do mail, so . . .)

there is a list, following this Question in our FAQ “I’m interested in
trying the NNTP interface, which News Reader should I use?”, here:
http://forums.opensuse.org/faq.php?faq=novfor#faq_nntp

and another, much more comprehensive list here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Usenet_newsreaders

along with a link to a comparisons
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_Usenet_newsreaders

and, i bet most of the online Linux rags have their own comparisons…

so, if you can define your “good” it should be easy to pick out the
one you want…but, suggest you give Thunderbird a try…especially
if you already use it for mail…

i did the opposite: i’m using kmail for my mail, but didn’t want that to
get mixed up with forum and list posts, so i migrated those to opera.
(probably isn’t the best NNTP client–tends to reply to sender–but i like
it’s filtering by tags feature, similar to gmail.)

there is no mix of mail, forum and mail list…

each have their own account, inside separate parts of Thunderbird…

that is, it is impossible to have one consolidated list of intermixed
email, openSUSE forum posts, and usenet threads…

well, it is possible, but you have to set it up to do that (but who
would?)…

i didn’t even know opera did nntp…
does it also do mail?

oh, are you talking about web-mail? and usenet or mail lists via the
web? that is not nntp.

and, if the original question was “What is the best way to read/reply
to newsgroups via a web interface?” i need to retract my answer–which
has nothing whatsoever to do with that question.

sorry…just took another peek at the OP and see he said web-based is
preferable…

newsnet in a browser–newfangled gadgets sometimes tire me out.

of course; what i meant was that i see x new messages in the systray, but
without opening (the client) i won’t know if it’s list or forum, or
private mail.

no, i keep forums & list subscriptions in their own places. the global
inbox is, by default, such a consolidated list of all new messages. i
think the default excludes usenet messages, but that’s easily changed.
it’s easy to set up filters to show all openSUSE stuff, KDE, or from
particular author(s).

yes, it does both.

not webmail. IMAP & NNTP.

Im after a good newgroups reader please. Web based would be
preferable, if not GUI one is just fine. I’ve came across PAN but just

that’s the original question; (s)he asks after both, but would prefer web.
what’s a web-based NNTP client? going to ask google…

I hope to pass nearby in about a week, from Bagdogra Airport to the Bhutanese frontier. While traveling I will contemplate how nice it is that openSUSE friends are eveywhere

Have you tried fetchnews as you local news proxy?
It’ll download the news for you from one or more sources, offering them to
any newsreader you prefer.

Should be a nice solution, if the connection is reliable or fast. Fetchnews
works at it’s own pace, and you read/write at max speeds.

Thanks for the reply guys… I’ found NNTPGRAB which looks good. Just need to sit down and play around with it more.
