newer version of kmix

Right now I’m experiencing this bug with kmix - https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=249508. The situation is pretty much the same in my case. When I use the pulseaudio channels with kmix everything is fine, but I switched to alsa channels only because of some troubles I had. Alsamixer on the other hand don’t have this problem.
The bug is supposed to be fixed, but in kmix version 3.9 and later. Right now I have the standard versions for opensuse 11.4 - KDE 4.6 “release 6” and kmix version 3.8 .

My question is is it possible to install the newer version of kmix without the need to update KDE too?

And I really need some basics on the naming schemes for the packages in the repositories. For instance my version of kmix(3.8) is listed as 4.6.0-3.3 . The first numbers seem to be the KDE version the package is for and the last seem to be something else.

This thing is actually more of an annoyance then some serious problem, but still I’d like to fix it if there is some(easy) way.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

You could have a go at grabbing one from the 11.4 KDE 4.7 repo or from the 12.1 oss repo (3.9 r5), install it and see how it goes. Should be easy enough, I suppose, to reinstall the standard 11.4 KMix if it goes wrong. I would expect you to get a dependency conflict warning in YaST, though, as that ‘packed’ KMix version number does not correspond with the KDE base system version, 4.6.x v 4.7.x., but you have to ignore that.

I’d recommend updating to Opensuse 12.1.
Many pulse audio probs are fixed in this release and it also comes with kmix 3.9

I’d love to go for 12.1, but last time I had it installed it was quite unstable for me. I wasn’t able to find what actually caused this and switched to 11.4 and everything were just fine. I even have a thread here in the forums about the problems with 12.1 I experienced. They were more severe than just some wrong slider.

On the other hand if I go for kde 4.7.x with opensuse 11.4 everything might be OK. I’m not really sure whether I want to do this. Things may come to the state they were before with 12.1 or even worse. Because I’ve never done such thing before I’d like to ask just how troublesome are such operations as updating KDE(or even the kernel)?

I saw some newer versions of kmix in the “KDE 4.7 opensuse 11.4” repository but wasn’t sure they will work at all. I might try if there is a good possibility for them to work even if I break some dependencies.

Thanks for the advices.

to add kde 4.7 to Opensuse 11.4 add this repo

Index of /repositories/KDE:/Release:/47/openSUSE_11.4

and follow these instructions

The latest stable point release of KDE SC 4.7. Use these repositories, if you want to have the latest version of KDE.
Warning Remove all repos from the Updated Apps only section (UpdatedApps/Extra) if you are going to use KR47.

here are all the kde repos

KDE repositories - openSUSE

So i just wanna double check the steps if I decide to update to the latest KDE for 11.4.

Here are the repos I have I now:

So I need to remove number 2 - Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra/openSUSE_11.4 and number 4 - Index of /repositories/KDE:/UpdatedApps/openSUSE_11.4 .
Then add these:

Core packages: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Release:/47/openSUSE_11.4/
Extra: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Extra/KDE_Release_47_openSUSE_11.4/

Then:

zypper dup --from KR47
zypper dup --from KR47-extra

Assuming the aliases I gave the new repos are KR47 and KR47-Extra.

Do I have this process right? Should I expect some problems after the update? Will all the configuration options(or even themes) I have now for KDE 4.6 remain, or I’ll have to deal with them again? Any other advices?
I hope this doesn’t mess up my opensuse to the way 12.1 was when I had it installed.

Thanks.
