I’m trying once again to set up Linux on my desktop. My first problem is that while I can find the music files in my windows hdd, I can’t play them. So I went to fluento to download something to fix it. Second problem. I can find where Firefox put the file I downloaded. Can anyone help with this?
Open yast, add repo “packman” and install smplayer and vlc.
All your music related problems will be solved.
When download is finished in FF, right click on the downloaded file and choose “containing folder” or something like that. It will redirect you to that folder.

in firefox go to Menu > Edit > Preferences > Main and look at the
“Downloads” section…where you can set where you always want it to
put stuff (click to use “Save files to” and fill it in) OR click
“Show the Downloads window when downloading a file” and THEN you can
see where it is going BEFORE you download…or you can choose to
direct it to another place…
if you do pick a spot then firefox you can expect your NEXT download
to go there also, unless you direct it to a new place…that is,
firefox always seems to download to the LAST place you downloaded to…
so, if you just LOOK before you click to download, you will know…

Yast is asking me for the url for “packman”.
I found that the default setting for FF downloads was the desktop, but I can’t see the file I downloaded(fluento?) on the desktop.
Also, I can’t seem to get the screen resolution sorted out. I have a 22" widescreen Benq, but its not recognised.
I’ve downloaded FF 3.5, but without a .exe file to double click, how do I install it now that I’ve got it?

if you go Menu > Edit > Preferences > Main, and in the “Downloads”
section place a checkmark in “Always ask me where to save the files”
you will ALWAYS see where it will save to, and can change it to suit
your fancy of the moment…
and, since firefox will always download to the LAST place you
downloaded to, if that always is the Desktop then it will always go
there…
HOWEVER: if you can’t find what you just downloaded you can initiate
another download and when it asks you what to do you can SEE where it
downloaded the last time (the stuff you can’t now find), see?
wait: in the newfangles KDE4.x you can’t just look at the screen and
see the “desktop” as you could in ALL former DEs…so. . .
wait: you downloaded fluento to try to play music??? man, the first
thing you need to do is to READ how to set up your machine to play music…

more reading and less clicking can save you LOTs of time and messed up

do NOT do it the “Windows Way”:
- browse to the firefox site
- down load to desktop
- double click an executable
that is the OLD FASHIONED, last century way to install viruses, worms,
malware, trojans AND some useful programs…
instead, read how to set up your repos in http://tinyurl.com/6jwtg9
and how to install software in Concepts…personally i use YaST, many
here use Zypper…the cool thing about open source and Linux is YOU
get to choose how you wanna do it…i suggest you try it first with
YaST…
