Newbie(s) learning openSUSE 11.1

Greetings from L.A.! I’m a new convert from WindowsXP looking to learn
openSUSE. Though I’ve been told that I should’ve started the Linux
transition with ubuntu, I chose to get openSUSE down.

So here’s post 1 on where I need the most help - I’ve completed
installing Firefox 3.0 but it will not launch! When I right click on
desktop screen and click web browser it sends me to the Mozilla
homepage. Again it’s installed and when I try to open it nothing
happens. When I try to open containing folder it sends me to tmp-file
browser. When I click on the Firefox icon it shows me a screen that says
firefox-3.0.5tar.bz2-Xarchiver 0.4.6. wheres their filenames. When I
click on the firefox filename and click open, the next screen pops up!
Open an archive. then it sends me to decompress file and prompts me
extract file with options. in the end of all that I get an error and
then it ask’s if I want to view the command line output?

This also happens with other programs that I’ve successfully
downloaded.What is the correct way?

What do you mean you’ve completed installing it? It comes with 11.1 by
default. To load it you should only need to press Alt+F2 and then type
in firefox (it’ll even auto-complete). It looks to me like you’re
trying to work really, really hard for no reason.

Good luck.

When you say you are installing programs how are you doing it? It sounds
like you might be downloading the source code.

You should either be using ‘YaST’
(http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Software_Management) or ‘1-click’
(http://packages.opensuse-community.org/) installs.

Let us know how you get on…

What nzlbob23 is telling you there is that with the majority of software
for Suse (and most other linuxes) is that it’s not like windows where
you hunt out a webpage, download an installer and then run it, you use
what’s called a package manager

Where exactly it is on the 11.1 menu I’m not sure as I’m still using
11, but look in Applications, System for Install Software or Yast, you
run the packager manager from Yast by going Software, Software
Management (it’s the same as what you get if you open Install Software)

As an example, to install firefox from the package manager just type
firefox in the Search box and put a tick in the checkbox at the side of
the Firefox entry in the list it finds, click Accept

But like ab@novell.com says, you’ll almost definitely see that firefox
is already there (unless you previously removed it)

The package manager works on what are called repositories, you may want
to look at adding some extra ones besides those supplied by default

Again in Yast, Software, you’ll see Software Repositories, check out
the Community ones after clicking the Add button, a good one to add if
it’s there is the packman repository
