That is finally going away as good 32-bit Arm processors are hitting the 2
US$ mark, making Postscript and HP-PCL reasonable inside low end printers.
Just the same, linux on bleeding edge hardware is problematic. I am
pushing it with a Gigabyte GA-990FX-UD3 (with FX6100, 6 cores 3.6 Ghz), i
TB disk, and a Radeon HD5770. System not fully built out yet. Need to
add internal USB floppy / card reader and a couple of SSDs, they are
coming along with a wide screen 24 inch display. (alternate output to 55
inch HDTV for movies.)
BTW doing (open)Suse since 7.3, redhat and slackware even earlier. I
still have a redhat 8.1 box distribution and i remember doing redhat from
floppies. Also MSwin 3.0 (3.1 upgrade that disabled DRDos 6.0 pissed me
off, and yes i still have the install floppies (some 5.25 inch). I saw
that computers were the way of the future in the late 1960s, wow i so
under-estimated that. It is now easy to have (in the US if you have a
good job) a PC that can eat a late 1980s early 1990s supercomputer for
lunch.
