I downloaded 11.1 version of openSuse last Friday, and installed it on my Acer Aspire One during the weekend, from my external DVD, and it all went perfectly fine.
I’m slowly getting to know better the system, last time I used any Linux distro was with RedHat 8, and I dont remember much of it, sorry :\
I just wanted to know where can I find info about what the system services (Runlevel) do, before I disable them for good, if there is any list or guide around with details about what they do and such…
Some of them are easy to understand, but many I dont know what they do at all, and I’m sure most of them I wont need them running in the background eating my RAM memory lol!
Well, thats all for now, hoping someone can help me out on this one, many thanks
Hi
If you start YaST->System->System Services (Runlevel), if you highlight
the service there is a brief explanation on what the service does, if
it’s running etc. If you select expert mode, you can see what runlevels
the system service (daemon) starts at.
Thanks for the answer, and also the links, very informative
I know a little bit about using YaST, and I also had a look to the sort description of the services there, but sometimes even the description is not too “clear”…
I was looking for something similar to BlackViper for Windows or something like that, but I’m not sure if that exists for Linux distros at all…
These are the services I’ve got running, some of them like kbd I suppose I better leave as they are, but if you or anyone else could let me know about them, that’d be great, many thanks
If you experience memory problems, visit the next IT-shop, the price per 1GB is less than $10. There’s no need to stop services that are currently not doing anything. Next week you’ll want to do something new, and it’s not going to work, simply because you stopped some services.
My advice: first start using your opensuse as it is. Get to know it, notice that under the hood something completely different is going on, start reading config files, read about how it’s all working, and then decide wether you want to stop/remove services.
If you buy a car, you do that to use the car, not customize its engine etc.
Ok, I’ll disable those since I am not going to use them at all, ever
About the drive and SMART, the hard disk I installed is not the original one, this one is a Toshiba 30GB, 4200rpm, the original one was the slow 8GB SSD, not sure but I think I better leave the SMART thing?
Thank you very much for your information, the other day I went to a book store and had a look to openSuse books, there are quite a few, and they all are very very thick lol! but I’ll end up buying me one anyway, thats the only way I’ll get the total hold of this system…
I know I shouldnt touch things I dont know how they work, but thats why I ask first
I always change/modify/tweak everything that passes by my hands, my engine? as soon as I bought my actual car, first thing I did was that, tweak the engine lol! cant help it…
