newbie - installation, drivers, virus protection firewalls

hello,

Is opensuse free, i have a linux magazine with a opensuse disk in it but have not put it in my computer and tried to install it yet? will my wireless usb adapter work, it’s a hawking usb adapter with a removable antenna for my hawking wifi booster antenna? what antivirus software and firewall do you recommend? Also could you recommend a good software for war driving like windows netstumbler. Any other help would be nice.

thanks

I am the original poster. I would like to add something. I do not want to use xp anymore. do you have to use opensuse with xp?

is opensuse free: yes
usb adapter: no idea, probably but more experianced people will know
firewall: opensuse has its own
antivirus software: none needed
do you have to use opensuse with xp: no, opensuse is a OS that you can install alongside XP or instead of XP, however this question makes me feel that you might be better of to d/l the liveCD from Software.openSUSE.org (gnome or kde are desktop envoirments, kde feels a bit more like you XP desktop) and try a bit, dont use it to install, use the DVD instead. But first play with the livecd so you get a feel for things and I would suggest you installed along side XP, the opensuse installer will make you a boot menu when you can select opensuse or xp when you turn the pc on.

If you do want to install it I suggest either Gnome of KDE 3 as desktop, KDE 4 is still a work in progress. The install DVD will give you the option.

If you use the Live version of opensuse that is first test if the USB wireless is supported by opensuse. If so you can use the Live version to do the install
Opensuse has also a database for the supported hardware ,check if you’re hardware is supported

Yes, openSUSE is available completely free of charge. Most Linux distros are completely free.
I don’t know about the USB adapter. It should work (no OS supports more hardware out-of-the-box than Linux) but you’d be better off asking someone more experienced than me.
As for the firewall software, I can tell you that openSUSE already has a good firewall pre-installed, so you don’t need to install one yourself.
openSUSE does not need any antivirus software at all. It is a Linux OS, so that means it is not susceptible to viruses and malware like Microsoft Windows is. Linux users have had very few encounters with any viruses designed specifically to infect Linux systems. Also, it’s almost impossible for a virus to execute on a Linux system, because Linux does not allow any such program to execute unless you expressly tell it to do so.
And no, you do not need to use openSUSE with XP. The openSUSE installer will, if you want, delete XP, and put openSUSE on your drive instead. It will also offer an option to dual boot with XP. If you want to have both OSes on your machine, you can choose that option. But to sum it up: No, openSUSE is not dependent on XP to run, it can be run as the only OS on your machine.
Hope that helps.
And finally, welcome to openSUSE!

All of which are pointless on openSUSE!

Guys, you should start taking entrance fees for your show.

One is maybe answering to a 1 year old posting, the second one to a bot(?) spamming advertisements.

Laurel & Hardy were just amateurs compared to you …

… MMD …

P.S. By fully citing the advertisement of that bot(?), you took care there will be a copy of it, even if the account will be deleted, you should ask for a fee from that company for good “product placement”.
