Hello Members.
I’ve had a taste of openSUSE 11.4 os, and have been slowly learning small bite sized pieces regarding using the ‘terminal’, but am still very…very basic on what is entered.
I’ve tried the new Gnome 3 live cd created from the official download website, and like using it so much, that I’d like to install it as an ‘upgrade’ if possible over the openSUSE version.
I haven’t found an ‘install gnome’ icon within the ‘Applications’ section, while using the Gnome 3 os in live CD mode to do any kind of upgrade, or full install from.
I’ve search the web for the official, and/or definitive way of doing a ‘Gnome 3’ upgrade when using the gnome3.org’s ISO CD while openSUSE 11.4 is already installed, and they seem to be so many different ways of doing it.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, or post any clear instructions on how i should be doing a Gnome 3 install using my ‘burnt’ cd image, bearing-in-mind, I’m very much new to using ‘terminal’ language.
Help would be great from members.
kind regards
Livio
I have never done this, but my first inclination would be to create a repository via Yast that used the burnt iso as the repository (Yast->Add Repository) and then Yast->“Install Software” and pick the newly added repo to add the “gnome” and other packages. But I don’t know if your iso has the necessary files.
Hi
The correct procedure is here openSUSE:GNOME 3.0 - openSUSE to upgrade from 11.4. To install from the LiveCD, search on install? it should be there, what version of LiveCD is it?
The easiest method is the Gnome3 Oneclick
openSUSE:GNOME 3.0 - openSUSE
Thanks caf4926, trouble is I’m using a ‘mobile broadband’ connection and I think it would take to long to do it the ‘one click’ web-page way.
Again, thanks malcolmlewis, I’m not sure what version it is, but i can tell you it was downloaded on Tuesday this week form the main GNOME 3 - Made of Easy website.
bsilvereagle your method sounds good, and thanks for the direction you’ve given me, but because I’d like everything to be installed with as little possibility of any issues, or hiccups, I’d really like a definitive method to upgrading my openSUSE 11.4 os to the Gnome 3 desktop interface.
I did read that the ‘Gnome 3’ interface may become an official openSUSE software ‘update’ package in November 2011, am i correct in this?, and therefore should I wait for it to be officially tested and approved?
Also I’d just like to mention, openSUSE 11.4 is really good to use, it runs smooth and looks great, although having tried the Gnome 3 desktop, it does give a real natural way of working, to me anyway, for me this is definitely the way forward.
So. if any members out there know a definitive method to upgrading openSUSE 11.4 using a LiveCD created from the Gnome 3 official website download, if they can help please post there knowledge here.
kind regards
Go into YAST and there is an icon to install to hard drive.
