Newbee experience with 13.1

In case it’s interrest someone in OpenSuse, here my experience with OpenSuse 13.1 to try to help improving this version. (As Newbee in Linux world, I only tryed Knoppix in the old time, now Ubuntu and Linux Mint).

I don’t know if I got unlucky, but here my experience to try the 13.1.

-Torrent download of the version 13.1 KDE 64bit, verification of MD, Correct. :shame:

-Try live DVD session to see how well it is, didnt find a way to try the OS directly from the DVD. -_-

-Forced to install, made new partion for it on new hard drive, install. Correct :shame:

-It even detected my Software Intel Raid, on my master boot HD and offer to configure it. Excellent. :shame:

-After the auto configuration, the fun start after the reboot.

-Load to for the first time in this new environnement (KDE) no network at all with Opensuse. After 4-6 hrs to figure out, KDE in 13.1 had the near same old trouble with my gygabit Marvell network 88e8056 as other version (Look like corrected in 12.X, but not in 13.1.) Needed to switch a configuration in the yast to finally get it working. (First time in my little experience, seeing a distribution or OS not able to use my network config) >:( Some info about 88e8056 https://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Network_(Wired)

-Then update was feasible, started it. I don’t know where or why, but after 150 updates (At this time), 2 echec, 2 times offer to send info to debugger. Since I didn’t know where or what exactly happened, answered didn’t know why, then I think it didn’t send info of the crash. -_-

-Then, since I was tired to hear the turbo sound fan of my nvidia GTX 760 with the driver nouveau. Install from here https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers the driver.
Since I have 760, choosed GeForce 6 and GeForce 7. wrong, it install only the 304 driver. It’s needed to choose the Geforce 8 to get the latest driver, not a big deal, but I needed to reinstall. -_-

-Since sound too was badly detected, result no sound at all with this OS. Again searching solution, found in other thing, I must choose another channel in the lower right sound config to get sound in KDE. -_- IEC958 from onboard sound card

-Install Flash, try Youtube, still no sound at all in all video, but i have sound in KDE. Still not corrected. -_-

-Next, try to Install Steam, tryed this link https://software.opensuse.org/package/steam Choosed the 13.1 wich one I must choose after ??? tryed one, echec. Only one working, “yourevil” Do I need to add comment… -_- But at least, steam installed after.

-Next, try a game, still no sound, still not corrected. -_-

-And the last before I got tired to all this… Try to install VLC and Chrome, found them in the (Repository), again wich file to choose, tryed one, echec, (try to find why and I’m not sure, but look like 2 install different, depending of Gnome or KDE, got enought of this. Same with Chrome. -_-

This said, this KDE is really beautifful in the looking, even now I got beautifull GRUB2. Great !!! In counter part, i’m sorry, but here, I gave up to try this OpenSuse for now. Next thing I will try another OS over this version since now I will have the partition free. But I wrote this to share my experience in case it can improve it.

6 years old config, Q6600 (Still OC at 3.4ghz) 8 gig memory
Asus Maximus motherboard (first model of this name)
Nvidia GTX760
Onboard sound IEC958
Onboard marvell 88e8056 PCI-E Gigabit network

I’m sure the feedback is useful, but even more useful (to you) would have
been to ask questions here when you ran into trouble, rather than
cataloging the things you had trouble with and then posting before you
hop to a new distro. Chances are most of your problems are easily
resolved/worked around, if only you had asked for assistance.

That’s actually what these forums are for. If you want things fixed,
it’s helpful to engage with the community, determine if there’s a bug or
defect, and get that entered into bugzilla so the developers can actually
have the feedback they need in order to fix things that are actually
broken.

Next time around, I would suggest availing yourself of the excellent help
the community can provide you with if/when you run into trouble.

agree with hendersj and just want to add something else.

like you I am mostly a noob with Linux.
not only that I am totally windows guy, have been on windows since version 3.11.
and I am also a .NET developer so like I said windows guy.

tried Mint some times ago for my personal PC, didn’t like it much as it did not have everything I needed at the time. tried Ubuntu with the same issues.

last year I want to update/upgrade my UnRaid server and convert it to a VM solution.
so got a used rack server that seams to do the trick (on paper) and found out that it will not work for what I wan to do (mainly it will not allow for me to run UnRaid as VM)
since than I have been playing with it trying to setup a decent VM/File server using various distros with different degree of success.
came upon OpenSuse and like it.
even as a noob you need to understand that a setup DVD will not allow you to test the distro live. That is what LiveCD is for.

and even if you did use LiveCD to try the OS you might still have trouble after install.
I had issue with network and other things after full install as well.
didn’t take me 5 hours to fix most of them but there are issues.

just last week I setup OS 13.1 on a 6yo HP laptop with nvidia graphics / broadcom wifi / polkaudio

LiveCD did not work at all. the screen was garbage, the machine was slow like hell, network worked though right out of the box.

after several updates (took me several tries to load the terminal since the screen was garbage) loaded the nvidia drivers and screen become readable and somewhat useable.

but other issues had me burning a full DVD and redo the setup from it.
first time used full KDE desktop setup. could not use the machine as before until nvidea drivers were loaded.
second time used LXDE desktop, all load up nicely and machine were very usable even with no additional drivers added.
with a little bit of searching found proper drivers for sound card and wifi card
laptop now works with my wireless and wired connections.
have full sound no problem. took me less than 3 hours to set all up. and that including all the updates and searching for drivers. the only thing left is loading codecs for video.
I can not play my videos yet.

I personally like OpenSuse so far as a server OS and as Laptop OS.
hoping I can move my 2 other PC to OpenSuse but I might need to use Ubuntu for my mythTV HTPC. it simply does not want to work in OpenSuse

Your comment about MythTV caught my eye. I have been running MythTV for several
years under openSUSE. Agreed, it is not a common configuration as most users use
MythBuntu.

If you want help with MythTV on openSUSE, please open a new thread.

MOved from Intsall/Boot/Login and open again.

Thanks, but I think I will setup a MythBuntu for mu HTPS. it is the mythTv native platform after all.
the only real demand on that machine is media center and an occasional web browsing.
as soon as I can make the NetFlix work on it I should be ok :slight_smile:
