getting ready to install 11.1 on our toshiba satellite L305-s5899.
i have fedora and open susie on my tower but ready to put on my daughters laptop. so i have played with linux but by no means know what i’m doing
are there any problems i should look for.
does the wifi work.
thats probably the big question. no wifi=no install.
as with most systems it comes with 2 recovery disk’s so i presume it has a partition for the recovery. any problem with this and if the install fails can i revert back to (hate to say it) vista
To answer your questions:
1 – Linux installations on laptops generally have problems with some of the function keys such as enable or disable wireless and change screen brightness, but otherwise all other hardware should generally works just fine.
2 – from googling the model number of the laptop you talk about, it looks like your laptop has an Atheros-based wireless card, which should be fully supported out-of-the-box by opensuse 11.1.
I’m not sure how your recovery DVD will operate – I suggest that you boot off it and see what it recommends doing and what partitions, if any, it is looking for. The opensuse installer will give you the option to choose which partition Linux is installed on, or to make a new partition from existing one.
I would recommend that you play with the opensuse live CD to check that all your hardware is properly detected and that you don’t encounter any unexpected errors while loading the system from the live CD. If all is well, you can launch an installation from the live CD.
