New

I’m using first time Opensuse. I have a few problems. It may be funny for you but im really NEW & need some help in few tasks.

  1. I need to change resolution of my boot splash (when system is loading) wanted res is 1680x1050
2)I want to install nvidia drivers and some app’s from Windows how to do this ?
3)need to mount ntfs partition and automount (every reboot)
4)how to change grub background picture ?
5)I have to edit OS list from bootloader menu

Thx in advance

Hi,

  1. In yast open the bootloader options. then edit your kernel’s VGA config parameter and change it to one of the values provided here:VGA Resolution Codes for GRUB & Lilo - LinuxQuestions.org
    But your resolution isn’t there.

  2. For the nvidia drivers have a look here; en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA
To run windows programs, here: Wine - openSUSE
    (scroll down to repositories)

  3. need to mount ntfs partition and automount (every reboot)
You need to add an entry in /etc/fstab
    See NTFS - openSUSE

  4. how to change grub background picture ?
The only thing I know is that the file /boot/message contains the boot picture. If you want to create your own, you might google for this information.

5)I have to edit OS list from bootloader menu
Same as 1), check in yast boot loader settings.

Hi
On this machine the grub entry uses vga=0x31a (running twin ViewSonic
VX1940w @ 1680x1050)

Cheers Malcolm °¿° (Linux Counter #276890)

I still have problems with resolution of bootsplash I have 16:9 display & need resolution 1680x1050. vga=0x31a shows stripped bootsplash on both sides like 4:3 display. I still have some problems with ntfs support.
i’ve added to fstab this
/dev/sda5 /media/Multimedia/ ntfs-3g user,users,gid=users,fmask=113,dmask=002,locale=pl_PL.UTF-8 0 0

One more thing something like this are appearing everytime I’m launching oS(on second display)

Maybe your grub image doesn’t fit. I don’t think that grub will stretch it to fit the current resolution. Which one did you use ?

What’s your problem with ntfs ? Can you please give more details ?

Is the second screen ok after you login in kde/gnome ?

change the above to

/dev/sda5 /media/Multimedia/ ntfs-3g defaults 0 0

NTFS works , gfxboot also works fine. Just after choosing OS when it is loading (something like usplash in ubuntu) bootsplash is in wrong resolution. That strange picture i’ve uploaded is when i’m entering password.

The most annoying thing is that display errors after boot when i’ll repair this i think i could use opensuse.

From what I can work out this is defined in 2 places…

Now first mkinitrd -s 1680x1050

I’ve checked you have an image…

So after that is set you need to choose the appropriate vga to find out hwinfo --vbe

Malcomlewis gave you one earlier I’m not sure what determines it but testing in vmware I get 1280x1040 for the one he suggested. I presume it is bios. Now having solved that I now have grub wrong and haven’t yet solved that but maybe vmware specific not sure.

I’ve tried this and it makes no difference ;/ Do you know what is wrong about this strange things on screen shown in picture above ?
One more thing hvinfo returns
