new version too new

wher can I download an older version. My system has less then 1 gig of ram so I can not run the 11.3 version, I tried 5 times. Thank you.

You can find the openSUSE version 11.2 ISO download files, for making bootable DVD & CD’s, from the following Link:

ftp://ftp.klid.dk/opensuse/distribution/11.2/iso/

Thank You,

Did you use the LiveCD or DVD? I’ve found that the DVD doesn’t require as much RAM.

I have run 11.3 on a system with 387 MB RAM. I installed using the NET install
CD and selected a text install using F3 before booting.

How much less then 1 gig?? I don’t think there is that much difference in the memory requirements of 11.2 and 11.3

Did you try a text install. On machines with low memory this will sometimes work.

Also if using a CD install from the first menu not a booted desktop. This will require less memory

hi and thanks for the replys. I am very new to this so please understand that fact. I would prefur to do an install to the hard drive. The mini tower had win 98 and I upgraded it to XP. it runs real slow and even slower when trying to access web pages which is mainly what that computer is used for. oh ya 255 Meg

I’d recommend a light weight distro like Puppy or DSL. Even if you manage to wedge a big distro like OpenSuse in it is going to run like a dog.

You could try LXDE desktop if you go ahead and try an openSUSE-11.3 install again. If installing from CD and low on RAM, do this with a text install: Text mode install from liveCD . The liveCD for installing LXDE can be found here: Index of /repositories/X11:/lxde/images/iso … select the architecture that is yours (likely openSUSE-LXDE-11.3.i686-0.1.1-Build1.1.iso )

Note for some hardware, one needs to add ‘nomodeset’ as a boot argument.

How do i go about doing that. I have an idea how to do it in DOS but not in this new program. Thuank you all for your help!!!

Just select your boot entry in GRUB and add nomodeset in the bottom line “Boot options:”

Like oldcpu says:
If the system has low ram, rather install one of the smaller desktops like lxde.
I have an old pentium3 with low ram (similar to yours) that I needed to use a debian/ubuntu based distro for the point of sale software I use.
Ubuntu doesn’t run, but Debian and lxde as the window manager are fine.
You can also choose to install lxde from the install dvd instead of gnome or kde.

There’s no difference between the requirements of 11.2 and 11.3. Like suggested, do a text install and use LXDE. Runs fine on an old 800Mhz AMD with 256MB of RAM.

There is a picture here, if the descriptions provided still leave you with a fuzzy / vague idea of this
File:Nomodeset-example.jpg - openSUSE

Edit - of course you won’t be running this under VirtualBox … I just used that as a ‘quick’ example

LOL well thanks but I have no clue how to do that. Do i have to type that in? Ya I know another stupid newbee question. but hay thats how i get some smarts. Thanks!!!

Yep! Type that in.

As soon as that menu shows up, and you start typing, you will see the letters you type appear in the options line.

Thanks i thought that is what you all were talking about.
