OK,…I just had to gloat a little bit. I’ve been with Linux about 3 years,…but never tried OpenSuse. Too complicated (I thought). Wouldn’t work on my older computers (I thought). I could never get my dinky little dialup service setup in it (I thought). Boy,…how wrong I was. Here I am with my shiny new install of OpenSuse 11.2…and it’s running better (using less memory) than the other distros I’ve tried on this older Dell Optiplex (P4–2.8Ghz–768Mb ram–160G hd). Sweet!-- It took me awhile,…but the dialup is working just fine (using it right now).

Thanks for the warm welcome! I just did a complete re-install (this time with the Xfce desktop). That’s running even better on this older Dell. I added the “Gnome System Monitor”,…and it shows that OpenSUSE is only using somewhere between 11% and 20% ram–(that’s a VAST improvement over anything else). And I was running basic installs of distros with LXDE. (I’m quite impressed.)
