New updates-USB2 and USB3 not recognized. Losing control of mouse, keyboard, DVD

This has started since some of the updates. I guess I need to start ignoring these “important” security patches until they have had a chance to be in the wild a little. I am having trouble with USB ports, and my IDE CDROM drive. It is IDE, but no longer found. It was totally gone yesterday, but today, it acted like it was seen, per the logs, but now it seem to have disappeared again. I’m thinking if I have an older live disk, maybe I can boot up and see if the problems go away.

This all started when all of a sudden I could no longer view, or transcode DVD movies, and it has gone downhill from there. I lost my usb mouse yesterday on a USB2 port… things are acting all borked. Is the thinking this is a kernel issue?

Later:
I just booted from the “dead” (IDE) dvd drive to 11.3. I’m typing this while on 11.3 Live. So clearly the DVD is NOT dead. Unfortunately it looks like a lot of stuff is borked on the 11.3 repositories, since it is getting rather old. Dependencies are missing, so alas, I am going to be unable to install the restricted media to test to see if I can play my movies on a second USB DVD drive. I’m getting: - Bad media attach point: Index of /pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/11.3/repo/oss , so am assuming this is a repository issue. But thinking as I’m typing, maybe it is a memory/space issue. I just did a “df” and got a bash: /bin/df: Input/output error.

Bummer… I guess there are limits to what I can do on a live disk. I think though this more or less proves we have something fairly serious going on though. The IDE DVD drive was so totally dead yesterday I could not get it to even light up. I could not get a disk to eject. I mean it was so dead, I was beginning to believe it was really dead. The kernel didn’t seem to see it, and the USB external DVD was not seen either. My mouse died at one point, but came back after a reboot. I am leaving town for a week, but is there anything I can provide that would help a “guru” figure out where this issue lies, or is it already taken care of?

Now rebooted under 12.3 partial dmesg:

6.188576] nvidia: module license ‘NVIDIA’ taints kernel.
6.188579] Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint
6.193551] vgaarb: device changed decodes: PCI:0000:02:00.0,olddecodes=io+mem,decodes=none:owns=io+mem
6.193628] NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86_64 Kernel Module 319.49 Tue Aug 13 21:15:53 PDT 2013
6.773045] xhci_hcd 0000:0c:00.0: Timeout while waiting for address device command
17.771098] usb 5-2: Device not responding to set address.
17.972096] usb 5-2: device not accepting address 3, error -71

I left the system up last night. This morning, I had lost all control of it. The keyboard and mouse are both connected to the legacy USB2 ports, but neither would respond. My only option was to power down.

Unfortunately… this is a repost from another thread and I’m leaving for a week in 10 minutes, but by then maybe others having the same issue will pipe up.

I’m the ONLY one having this issue? I find that very hard to believe. Since it is happening on two separate systems, by different manufacturers.

Support for 11.3, and 11.4 btw, has stopped ages ago. Please post output of

zypper lr -d

BTW. I do think this is a hardware issue. Motherboard?

NOT for 11.4. 11.4 is actively supported.

11.3 is not supported, there are no updates, and all its repos should be
empty or not present. DO NOT use 11.3.
