New to Suse, no Wireless

So I dont seem to have any wireless, Not sure how to look for wireless networks.

card is a PRO/Wireless 3945ABG

I have read alot of post on this subject but they are moving to fast for me.

Can someone strat from the begining and help me set up wireless?

wlan0 Scan completed :

Channel:3
Frequency:2.422 GHz (Channel 3)
Quality=88/100 Signal level=-45 dBm Noise level=-127 dBm

it is scanning for networks

If it is scanning, then you need to check that your radio-enable
switch is turned on. If that is OK, then you need to configure the
wireless with YaST and NetworkManager.

Larry

yes the switch is on. I have no idea how to configure it

Soory, that shouldnt have been so hard.
This time I simply clicked on New Connection and It showed my network.

The problem was that if my ethernet cable is pluged in it overrides the wireless. Vista doesnt do that

Sorry such a newby problem

IT only works for a few minutes and some of the time.

I can occational see my network. Once in a while it will even connect but most of the time it fails to let me on the internet.

The Vista machine beside me is fine and hasnt lost connection

So, I have just reinstalled suse for some other reasons and I am having the same issues with the wireless networks. The card is active, the Card is scanning but When I go to New Connection Wlan0, there are no avaliable networks? But I know there are available networks

So I still can not connect to wireless.
I tried rienstalling suse, because I was told that may help and still no luck.

i had similar problem with this card. try installing iwl3945-ucode firmware package.

yast says it is already installed, thanks

a mistake, sorry:
ipw-firmware package

It doesn’t matter what YaST says if dmesg says otherwise. Check it.

still not seeing any wireless networks
can someone help me start form the begining.
What commands do I need to check the adapter, check if it is scanning, and then lets configure it.

This is a laptop and I dont see how I can us an OS that can not see wireless networks, plus Im tired of sitting next to the wall

Thanks

Have you checked the dmesg output as I suggested several posts ago? Is
there any mention of a problem?

Normally, I would give you the set of commands that you are asking
about, but you don’t follow instructions. As a result, you get to do
your own research!!

Open a terminal and enter the following commands:

man iwlist
man iwconfig
man ifup

Read and reread until you understand what each of those commands can do.

sorry, but my post overlaped your. I didnt see that you had said to run dmsg. I normal read and follow direction very well.

linux-4olk:/home/gordon # ifup

Usage: if{up,down,status} <config>] <interface> -o <options>]

Options are:
[on]boot : we are currently booting (or shutting down)
auto : alias for boot
hotplug : we are handling a hotplug event
manual : we do it manually (default, just needed with ‘rc’
rc : we are called by a rc script (implies auto)
dhcp : we are called from dhcp client
prov=<n> : use provider <n> (for dial up interface)
nodeps : don’t shut down interfaces depending on this
debug : be verbose
nosyslog : don’t write to syslog even if USE_SYSLOG=yes
If options are contradictionary, last option wins. Unknown options
are simply ignored, so be careful.

Im trying to figure out what all that means right now.
give me a few

iwlist - basic is used to display all wireless networks avaliable, basically I thing mine is telling us that it isnt scanning.

By the way thanks. I really want to uns=derstand this not just fix it

linux-4olk:/home/gordon # iwconfig wlan0

does that mean it is trying to connect to “private_network”
that is my neighbors network.
