Just thought I’d pop in and introduce this here newbie to openSUSE (I hope this is the right place anyhow). I’ve used Ubuntu for a little while but I’m out for something different, and I thought I’d give this one a shot since I’ve heard nothing but praise for it.
I don’t really believe in the idea of New year’s resolutions, but for lack of a better phrase that’s what I’m going to attempt to do this year - completely give up commercial games / software so that I can stick with free software on my computer for as long as it lasts.
Anyway, thanks for providing such an easy to use website (and hopefully easy to use distro - we’ll see how I go!). Maybe I should document my migration from Windows to OpenSUSE…
Welcome to openSUSE and the forum, this section being the best place for introduction and maybe some induction from the Staff members. You could even meet a few gamers and there is a sub-forum dedicated to them, so good luck with the resolution.
trying to save that time by rushing ahead to an unplanned install will
probably cost you more time than you ‘saved’…

DenverD: I have been reading through some more documentation because I have a philosophy similar to your signature there, I like to get things done right the first time (if I can) Thanks for the direction to that Howto / FAQ though - that’s going to come in handy.
Note this is only a volunteer support forum. OpenSUSE Linux distribution design/decisions/packaging are all made elsewhere (per that communication channel link) in the mailing lists and IRC chat channels.
welcome…free advice: go slowly, read as much as you can…there is
a LOT to learn (and unlearn from previous experiences which might
actually harm this system)…

Has anybody done a “Migration from Ubuntu to openSUSE” or from Fedora? I can’t find anything in Google and I am wondering if maybe there is a Wiki page or a blogger that effectively does this, even if it is not advertised as such? I don’t know enough about openSUSE to do anything like that justice (at this point and time).

we seem to have new folks coming into the forums fresh from one or
more of the below, practically every day:
XP
Vista
Win7
Ubuntu
Fedora
others
just read every new post that comes into install/boot/login,
applications, networking and wireless–its like a near steady stream…
