NEW TO OPEN SUSE :)

Hi peoples, after a long time of distro hopping, i finally settled
down with open suse  I’ve been searching for a distro that is strongly focused on kde with a solid background and stability with corporate backing to ensure a quality system, and i must say, that i think opensuse fits that description very well

although, i have a couple of concerns… and i would like peoples opinions…
the microsoft/novell deal…? is this a good thing or a bad thing for us users in your opinion?
Also… since opensuse is an enterprise desktop, do u think there is a good chance that they will start charging in the near future for their distro like redhat?

just wanna clear these things up with myself before i fall in love  hehehe
thanx

It will hardly affect you as an Opensuse user. The deal focuses on interoperability between those of their products which are targetting the enterprise market segment.
If you are an Open Source zealot, the deal may cause you bad dreams, that’s all.

Opensuse is not an Enterprise desktop. Novell “sells” Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED), but Opensuse is a community project. Novell will not charge for it.

Uwe

thankyou for the clear answers
hangon a minute…
1 sec…

Ok, Im in Love with this desktop
my distro hopping days are over, hehe.
This is the best kde distro i have ever used, and unlike
alot of the others, everything is working… including my usb mic
and my multimedia keyboard functions/volume scroll wheel. heh, im impressed

can’t wait for kde 4.1, i played with opensuse kde4 and its great so far, but just installed kde 3.5 for now.
Hats off to Suse, this distro is great

as a matter of fact opensuse doesn’t focus on KDE, in their installer even they emphasize they do not have a preference and that the choice is personal, admittedly it might seem that way because KDE4 here is better then fedora’s or ubuntu’s

with a solid background and stability with corporate backing to ensure a quality system, and i must say, that i think opensuse fits that description very well

apart from your KDE point KDE i’d say fedora and ubuntu fit that glove too

the microsoft/novell deal…? is this a good thing or a bad thing for us users in your opinion?

imho the M$/novell deal is a very bad development for the open source community but I hardly think it will matter for the average opensuse user. opensuse != novell, it is a community distro not really affected by the whole thing, i personally believe it does stink though and hope that after 10.3 the smell doesn’t blow down to opensuse anymore. My personal opinion here is that for this particular matter I find myself standing in the redhat/canonical camp.

Also… since opensuse is an enterprise desktop, do u think there is a good chance that they will start charging in the near future for their distro like redhat?

as stated opensuse isn’t an enterprise distrom that is SLED. Redhat does not charge for Fedora either. still the ties between SLED and opensuse may seem tighter to users then fedora does to RHEL.

finally, welcome! hope you enjoy your stay.

I agree (Hi Uwe!) if you make a ‘Byte count’ there is considerably more free
stuff released by MS than proprietary stuff released by Suse in the period.

I am not particularly ‘religous’ either way, but I think Microsoft are
showing signs of being significantly impressed by the ‘Open Source’ concept,
without implying that it has anything to do with the agreement as such.
What’s the fuzz if MS think they can turn a profit by giving an inch? I can
see no signs that Suse has given any fraction of an inch on this issue.

Personally, I think the only thing that the Suse distro is lacking - it is
NOT a source based distro! All respect to Yast, and everything that Suse
is - but it really should have been ‘source based’, like Gentoo!

Imagine Gentoo being put into the hands of a crew of ‘Enterprise Focused’
people?

(Sorry, everyone!)

thanx. yer i know that opensuse probly have even attention to kde and gnome, but i’de say that suse has always had the best implementation of kde than any other distro, and i’ve tried them all!
They sure do, do a great job, even gnome in suse is a great implementation…

as for ubuntu… ubuntu is ok, i’ve used it for a couple years on and off, but it really does make gnome look ugly:)
I wouldn’t recommend “Kubuntu” to anybody that likes kde, it is the
crapiest, most buggy distro i have ever used, its a joke. I wish that Canonical payed more attention to kubuntu than it does.

Fedora has a great Kde Desktop, your right there. But i’ll stick with opensuse for quite a while i think
thanx
kaddy

Oh by the way, when i said kubuntu has a crappy buggy distro, i wasn’t talking about kde4, i know that kde4 distro’s are still buggy has hell, that is expected. I was talking about with kde 3.5x

A variant (perhaps official?) could always be made to build the src.rpms

RPM is NOT binary only

Personally, I think the only thing that the Suse distro is lacking - it is
NOT a source based distro! All respect to Yast, and everything that Suse

Source based distro has one killer problem:
Time consuming.

Install something like pidgin is not bad, it “just” takes a couple of minutes (vs a couple of second compared to binary). But the kernel…

Imagine Gentoo being put into the hands of a crew of ‘Enterprise Focused’
people?

We will have to teach people how to compile a kernel, which is just too much hassle for a corporation with more than 100 pcs. And support would be more complicated, since compiling create too much options.

Of course, as some-guy mentioned: there are src.rpm around. But for most users it’s too complicated for minor performance boost

Every distro is source based. The only variable is at what level this takes place.

The KDE4 on OpenSuse is better then a person thinks and depending on use for a person is getting pretty decent.

There are a lot of us, that put on KDE4 to try it out, expecting to get KDE3.5 back on later, but we still have never left KDE4.

They did some good work to make KDE4 on OpenSuse a little bit more stable, and the 3.5 programs work well that I need under KDE4.

Novell does focus a bit on Gnome, but you are right they don’t totally forget about KDE either. They have some nice start up screens and great backdrops, and many fine details have been worked on to polish up the look

What about OpenOffice? (hours long)
