Hello, I’m trying to build a linux pc, its a 2003 dell optiplex smthn-or-other, intel p4ht clocked at 300, all stock intel stuff, like chipset and network controller, 512 ram, 40gig hdd cleaned out with nothing but openSuse 11.1. Install went smoothly, except network manager says “eth0 disconnected” and I have no idea what to do. My internet is a cable modem. I plug the ethernet wire into my old pc (windows xp pro sp2) - internet works fine. I pull the wire out of the old pc and plug it in the back of the new one - nothing. Both pcs have regular ethernet ports, the kind built into the motherboard. Checked bios - evrything is enabled. Do I need some addl drivers or something like that? Plz help, I’m a total newbie to all things linux.

Have you verified your network card is good? If you put this card in the
XP box or the XP box’s card in this box does that help? What kind of card
is it, anyway?
Good luck.

Re: network card
Is it the part where you plug the ethernet wire? In that case I cant remove it since its integrated into the motherboard. HOWEVER i do have plenty of slots for cards. Should I buy a separate network card? Do they come with drivers? Again, sorry for being such a noob, im sure its frustrating…

Yes, that is the part. As it is integrated you’ll need to check which
chipset it uses from your motherboard vendor. Most cards do not need
third-party drivers as they are integrated into the Linux distribution and
just work out of the box. Some are not that nice though (Broadcom should
be avoided). I’m fairly sure my laptop has an Intel card integrated into
it and it’s been fine. In my desktop-ish machines a decade ago 3com cards
always worked nicely. Perhaps temporarily try to move your XP card (if it
is not integrated) into your Linux machine to see if it works. If not
pick up an old cheap NIC or borrow one from a friend for testing.
Good luck.

You can ‘easily’ find out what chipset it’s using by typing:
/sbin/lspci
as a normal user or root.
The network adapter can show under various named, integrated ones often appear like this;
00:08.0 Bridge: nVidia Corporation MCP55 Ethernet (rev a2)
or
** 02:01.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82547GI Gigabit Ethernet Controller**
If you can copy us the information we can give you better advice.
It’s an Intel 82540 EM gigabit controller. I’ve tried a different linux distro and even a fresh installation of xp pro, all with the same result. I guess a new plug-in nic is the way to go, right? In that case, can I get a wireless card without the regular wired type? I have a router and this computer is going upstairs where there’s no ethernet wiring.

If it doesn’t work regardless of the Linux distribution or operating
system on the computer then maybe the NIC itself is broken (bad circuitry,
short, etc.). Do you get an IP address? Does it work using non-DNS
things? Get the output from the following commands, please:
ip addr
ip route
cat /etc/resolv.conf
Also if you have another system in your home get the output from the same
commands (assuming Linux) or the IP, netmask, gateway/route, and DNS
server information from those computers however the OS allows.
Good luck.
