New to kde

Hi. I was using gnome for… well I don’k know for how long but it’s been years. Now, as 12.2 coming i installed it and tryied kde. I have some problems, though:

  1. I disabled all dimming/screen saver stuff but still, after a few minutes the desktop gets dimmed. This would not be a real problem in itself but after i resume (no logout or anything) the network manager shows no connections (i run a dsl connection through NetworkManager, not ifup) and my connection get closed. I need to goto yast, select ifup method, then reselect network manager to get it work again,

  2. sometimes (idk when, i couldn’t find a “pattern”) after a minute of inactivity i get no signal to the monitor so i need to move the mouse. It’s really annoing and i can’t find any setting to stop it.

  3. I changed kdm to “no theme” and set a custom background and fonts but i still get the default one. Do I need something more to do to get it work?

Sorry, i’m really new with kde. I’m a gnome user.

le : oh, and i posted here because i’m using kernel version 3.4.6-2.10 compiled on 64 bit environment.

Configure wireless like this

And power

That did’t work. The monitor is still dimmed after a few minutes and kills my connections.

All I can say is, re-examine my tips.
Are you on Mains power or battery?

I use a destkop so i’m not using a battery. Acutally, I have set those settings as you said before and didn’t really work. Is there a low level editor for yast settings, as gconf editor for gnome?

Check YaST > System > /etc/sysconfig Editor, navigate to ‘DisplayManager’ > DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME and set it to ‘openSUSE’

i don’t think you set the power saving setting correctly, try this:

go (the exact terms may vary a little, i have an older KDE) Configure
Desktop > Hardware > Power Management

the window will change–on the “Settings and Profile” tab of the Global
Settings section (selectable on the left) go to the “Profile Assignment”
section and spin the dial next to “When AC Adaptor is plugged in” to
“Performance”

then, on the left select “Power Profiles” and the window changes again…

in the center you will see three possible power profiles, click to
highlight “Performance” and look at what you now have set to happen–i
guess you have selected to dim display after “a few minutes” (as you
wrote)–so, just spin that dial up to whatever you want it to be…also
set “Screen Energy Savings”, “Suspend Session” and other setting as want
them…

if you get stuck, don’t overlook the “Help” button on the lower left…

let us know how it goes after that re-look…
