Hello Gnome-3 folks, Does the screen lock work on Gnome3 for Opensuse 12.3? Control-Alt-L will not lock it. Thanks, Chris

Hi
It works for me in 3.8.2. Have you checked it exists in
Settings->Keyboard->shortcuts->system?

Yes, it’s there, it just doesn’t do anything.
I also have the extension installed that puts the lock in the status area, it don’t do nothing either ;-(
I have an obnoxious teen who is always trying to hijack my computer and need to lock it, I currently need to either log out or go back to KDE.

Hi
Even the lock command under the menu? What version of GNOME Shell?

3.8.2 as well, just did a dup.
No worries, I’m back working in KDE. I like the gnome environment, but it doesn’t feel quite ready for prime-time yet.
and I like the KDE apps better

Hi
Hmmm, well if the menu lock etc isn’t working, worthwhile reporting as
a bug then. I don’t have KDE so might be some conflict…
You could try creating a test user and login to gnome only and see if
it’s duplicated for a test user?

I’ll do that when I next reboot!
Thanks,

I use GNOME(see sig) and (ctrl+alt+L) does work
It think some extensions don’t play well with the desktop.
Do create a fresh “user” and try again.
I too have this issue. Super L does not lock screen. Editing System, Keyboard, Shortcuts, System, Changing lock screen keys to cntrl + alt + L doesn’t work either. No lock option on the pull down carrot near the power button on the top menu. Changing lock screen setting back to Super + L does not work. Cntrl + Shift + L, Super +Shift + L. Just in case L must be upper case. Nada.
Note I installed Leap with KDE, had it crash as I have dual monitors installed. Then added Gnome and booted into Gnome. Settings Details shows openSUSE Leap 42.1 (x86_64), Gnome Version 3.16.2.
Hi ksanger, and welcome to the Forums.
Please note that this thread is more that 3 years old and a lot of water has passed since…
Nonetheless, I can confirm that on a pure Gnome Leap 42.1 install Super+L locks (no Shift, Ctrl or Alt needed) and a “Locker” button is available in the drop-down menu next to the power button.
Maybe the original KDE install had SDDM as display manager and GDM was not installed instead? Or some other conflict with the system settings?
Anyway, I suggest you to open a thread of your own on this topic if you find that KDE might be involved.
Yes, and AFAIK GNOME3’s screen locker only works with gdm.
So, install gdm and set it in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager and it should work.
@OrsoBruno; Thanks it sounds like a good idea. Maybe the method I used to install Gnome didn’t include everything needed. YaST does show gdm version 3.14.2-12.1 is installed along with sddm version 0.13.0-7-3. Must have an incorrect switch…
No, that is normal.
If you install another displaymanager it will not be activated automatically.
You have to set the one you want in /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager (in this case DISPLAYMANAGER=“gdm”).
That is on purpose to prevent “surprises” if you have more than one installed (which is the default, since xdm is always installed as well).
Got IT! Had to change Yast, System, /etc/sysconfig Editor, Desktop, Display manager, DISPLAYMANAGER to gdm as mentioned earlier in this thread. Helps to read the whole thread numerous times and have people like you telling us it really does work. Also had to learn how to correctly log in with gdm by hitting the gear and selecting Gnome first. Now to see if the other logged errors stop now that I’m running Gnome and correctly using gdm.
Using Yast, Software Management, View, Patterns, then installing GNOME Base System and GNOME Desktop Environment with openSuse Leap 42.1 installed with KDE, then setting the DISPLAYMANAGER setting, rebooting, and loging in setting the desktop to GNOME worked. AMAZING.
Thanks.
Most displaymanagers remember the last selected session and start this automatically the next time you log in.
The default can be changed in /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager (DEFAULT_WM), you can also use YaST->System->/etc/sysconfig editor for that.
You don’t have to use YaST btw, you can edit the files in /etc/sysconfig/ (displaymanager and windowmanager) with a text editor manually as well if you prefer.
