New Suse 13.1 installation with KDE. Cannot log in

I did a new install of OpenSuse 13.1 with KDE. I was getting the desktop setup and did a re-boot. Now, I cannot login with the KDE Plasma workspace.

When I try to login, an image of a hard drive appears, fades away and I am put back at the login screen. I can login with with Failsafe.

I opened the file ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc and put an entry under Composting: Enabled=false That did not help.

The computer is a laptop HP/Compaq nx 7400

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Were you re-using /home?

If you login with failsafe > create a new user and test normal login with that…?

Sounds like a graphics driver crash. IIANM you have an intel chip, the intel driver shipped has some bugs (can cause crashes with compositing).
A new version is already in the update repo, so I would suggest to just boot to recovery mode and install all updates. (“zypper up”, YaST->Online Updates or Apper)
Chances are that normal mode works then…

Oh, and ~/.kde/share/config/kwinrc is for KDE3, which doesn’t even have compositing. So this won’t have any effect of course.
For KDE4 you would have to edit ~/.kde4/share/config/kwinrc on openSUSE…

IT WORKS! I installed the updates. Now, I can log in and go to work. Thank you very much for your help.

One more item: Please send a message to the team that designed the KDE4 interface. They did an excellent job. The screens are gorgeous.
