New OpenSuse use having trouble with Network/Internet

Hi, im new to the Opensuse community and i am hoping to learn more. I have never used Linux on any real scale so please be tender with me.

I have just installed openSUSE-11.1-DVD-x86_64.

To be honest, i can understand some of the outputs but not them all. i have tried multiple guides but to no avail. So far i have installed the NIC, my router (orange livebox) is connected to ethernet port. i set everything to DHCP, the DHCP works on the router.
But i cant seem to get on to the internet. i can get an ip address assigned but i cant view webpages, get a direct connection to the routers interface. i tried pinging but the output is wierd and it seems to ping repetitively.

I read something about attansic NICs. that happens to be what i am using but there wasnt a solution posted. PLEASE HELP A NOOB!

I should be able to do anything you guys instruct me, but please try to keep it simple, im not that good yet.[/size][/size]

Few things to check:-
1 ) ipv6 is disabled
2 ) firewall is set correctly
3 ) nameserver is correct
4 ) if using Firefox, it is set to work online
5 ) resolv.conf looks correct

1- ipv6 is disabled
2- i turned firewall off to make sure
3- i havent really configured the name server myself. i thought it would do this automatically. could you elaborate a little. how would i set this and where would i find the correct address to set it to. my network consists of 2 laptops (xp + vista…) and my PC which is newly installed OpenSUSE.

Can you post the contents of
/etc/resolv.conf
In a terminal window execute the following and post the results.


su
route -v

If there are sensitive IP’s in the above, you can use replacement IP’s.

Are you using dhcp or fixed IP?

It might save time if you describe the topology of your network (i.e. how is
every thing connected, wire, wireless,switch(es) and router(s) etc.)

Everything is set to DHCP as far as i can tell. ive been through the yast network settings like 10 times and i have set everything to automatic. :frowning: thanks!

Can you ping the Windows machine and router?


ping -c5 192.168.1.78

I am able to ping both my windows machines and my router but still no internet access. that must mean the problem arises on my router correct?

from the opensuse machine i cant even access my router configuration page even though i can ping it?

Actually I think the problem most likely resides with you name server
configuration. That is why I am asking for the contents of /etc/resolv.conf.
Just to make sure see if you can ping google by IP. Try:


ping -c5 64.233.169.103

Also post the results of:


cat /etc/resolv.conf
