I am doing a new installing of Leap 15.4 on HP Z640 after adding NVMe and reconfiguring my dual boot to suit.
I am using an usb for installation and have a good copper network connection.
After a couple of attempts with the black screen I selected check installation media. This gave me the choice of what media to check. I received an OK and the then the installation proceeded through Loading Basic Drivers, Hardware Detection and then I was able to select various options. I was able to connect to the network and at this point the installation proceeded repeating the 6/6 downloads but alas the system went dark again. Just before this I saw a line with zypper in it so the installer had been trying.
Alas I could not capture any of this info which went past very quickly and my purpose here is to find out if there is anything I should look for if I get any options which come up if I use media checking option at the start.
I see there are several threads suggesting I turn off acpi? but never had any such problems with these H Z640 machines with identical NVMe installing Leap 15.3 or TW.
I will burn a full live system and try this but if this rings any bells it would be good to know as network installation is my preferred method.
and have done many network installations in the past but this time the installation process fails
Hi Malcolm,
Booting to an usb stick doesn’t have this option afaik. No idea how to get that far.
Not sure how many use network installation, which, as you will appreciate is usually very simple. I am hoping others will have been able to raise a bug.
I am pressed for time now so am downloading the full iso as I write this. May have time later to get back to this.
Hi Malcolm,
I have been booting from an USB and grub menu is never seen unless I am missing something?
I left the machine to download leap15.4 full system, (checked sha256 OK) and installed on an USB. Tried using that for installation having checked the media and but still the same problem. I even tried upgrading my existing system but still get the same problem, the installer just goes dark.
Is the full iso capable of running as a live distro? I didn’t see that option on the USB or download page.
Will play around with my 15.3 installers to see if the issue is hardware related or something in the installation software.
When I embarked on this I was planning a new installation as I have just put in he NVMe card but not created any partition on it yet as I would normally do this during he installation. Could this be an issue?
OK, yes I have seen this screen but didn’t recognise it as the grub screen. Many thanks for the link. After checking the media it starts the installation.
As I recall all my previous installations did not have any UEFI issues at start and took me to the configuration and formatting options. I have used UEFI boot in the past but not secure boot as I recall Malcolm suggested not.
It is quite possible that the machine I am working on does have secure boot which might explain my problem but should I not be given an option to enrol the keys on MOK list when I start the machine and select the USB to boot?
I have now seem a thread here in which Malcolm Lewis explained what to do with the Enrol MOK option but I have only seen this once today and just ignored it as I have on previous occasions. Still reading your link but will need help for sure but will start over and see if I can enter the suggested params.
Now I have recognised what I had been looking at I was able to add nomodeset and all is now working as required. I had been thinking of editing grub when using yast. Duh.
