New name for openSUSE as requested by SUSE

Not a lizard fan personally, but I’d much rather have a chameleon than a komodo dragon. I like the cuttlefish. A cuttlefish would be a good mascot for a waterproof version of the OS.

As to the main question. A minimal name change could be enough to increase the differentiation from the commercial project. The smaller the change the smaller the disruption. How about just changing one letter?

What about openYUSE as a new project name?

Someone above suggested PRIMAL. Not my first choice, I’d rather use openPRIME. Has a nice quality feeling and keeps the open from openSUSE.

Keeping with the lizard theme, in 2016 Brazilian and Canadian researchers found that Teiú lizards are warm-blooded. These lizards are the largest in Americas, reaching 1.5 to 2 meters in length.

So, how about openTEIU? Or openTEIÚ? Or open TEGU, as google translated it…

Abstract from site https://agencia.fapesp.br/pesquisa-descobre-que-os-lagartos-teius-tem-sangue-quente/22590 translated with Google:

Research finds that tegu lizards are warm-blooded
January 27, 2016

During mating season, the animals' body temperature remains
high, several degrees above the temperature of their burrow

Peter Moon | Agência FAPESP – The tegu is one of the largest lizards
in the Americas. It can reach up to 2 meters in length. It is also,
as of now, the only warm-blooded lizard known to science.

The discovery of the tegu's ability to regulate temperature provides
an important clue to understanding how endothermy may have
evolved in the ancestors of mammals and birds (and dinosaurs).

This is the conclusion of a study developed by Brazilian and
Canadian biologists at the Biosciences Institute of São Paulo
State University (Unesp) in Rio Claro, with support from FAPESP,
and published in Science Advances.

Just my (probably worthless) 2c :upside_down_face:

SUSE is not only asking for its name to be discontinued, but also for its logo, a chameleon.
Chameleons belong to a family of sauropsids, the Chamaeleonidae.
Sauropsids include turtles and saurians (squamates, crocodilians and birds).

Since SUSE is kindly asking its child openSUSE to leave the nest and take flight, why not look for a bird’s name and make it a logo?

Afterall, a crocodile has a way of biting into life, which isn’t bad either.

The sqamates include snakes, lizards, iguanas, geckos and varans. A little more difficult, but why not?

Absolutely false. The logo things was 100% community driven.

The chameleon logo is part of the SUSE brand as indicated here. Geecko is owned by SUSE, not openSUSE.

Moreover, Robert Sirchia and Richard Brown didn’t just talk about a name change, but a rebranding link.

As a lawyer, I can’t see how SUSE’s request could be limited to a name change. Legally, it can only be a request for the cessation of use of a trademark (openSUSE) causing confusion with that of the claimant (SUSE).
The SUSE trademark consists not only of the name SUSE, but also of its logotype, including the chameleon, and all visual elements that identify SUSE.

Analysis shared by others: Rebranding is not just about the name but also the logo. The famous chameleon, symbol of SUSE, may no longer be used

Sorry for the community, but we’ll also have to say goodbye to Geecko.

There was a recent logo competition…

During the community meeting this week where the results were discussed, participants expressed the view that members of the openSUSE Project have an opportunity to participate in the selection of our new logo, and that SUSE, which holds the trademark to the openSUSE logo, be involved with the process for selecting a branding decision with regard to the results. After all, this decision impacts the collective identity.

To facilitate this, there is a plan to organize a vote between the current logo and the proposed new design, allowing our community to have a say in this important decision. Furthermore, members of the project are collaborating with SUSE on the implications of the branding initiatives and some have expressed the desire for SUSE’s input to ensure there is an aligned vision for the future of openSUSE.

Good idea focussing on the package manager (although ‘openZypper’ may be an unfortunate name for people who wear trousers). How about just ‘Zyx’?

The challenge

  • Divide the forum into two groups.
    • The first group suggests two- or three-syllable names.
    • The other group proves the suggestions unusable.
    • The challenge ends at five usable suggestions.

That is literally this entire thread.

The thread could need more focus. …and the challenge was my awkward way of saying just that, I think.

Personally I believe that the challenge will not yield one single usable suggestion, even with the stricter limitations, but I could be mistaken.

This thread is not even an official one or coordinated in any way. It was started by a normal user “just for fun” in “open chat”. This can be seen by reading the opening post.

The official coordinated communication threads were announced on the ML and in the forum:

I sadly understand the context now.

This is why the thread is meaningless and should have been closed.

Hint: It’s not too late.

The “official” threads are for serious discussion about solutions, ideas, and plans. I’d much rather see the random flyby and joke suggestions stay right here where they are.

We’re not even considering the “name” in the official discussions at this point.

That is the reason for having an “Open chat”. Meaningless, unrelated, non technical talk about everything and nothing. You hamster is coughing and you need help? Post it in open chat. Want to share the recipe for your famous cheese pie? Post it in open chat…

It’s an open chat thread - if people want to bikeshed around this, that’s fine.

Just so long as they understand this discussion is not official in any way, shape, or form.

As @sfalken said, there are official discussion threads in these very forums that are about solutions, ideas, and plans. Those discussions are seeded in the “Project Discussions” category, and anyone is welcome to participate - but those are serious discussions, and are being specially moderated to keep them focused and on-track - as such, there is an additional step needed to be taken in order to participate.

And, as he said, the name (and branding) is not a part of those discussions at this stage. The topics are around project governance, structure, and process (the “rebranding” discussion is intended to be not about “what do we call ourselves” but “what would need to happen in order for a rebranding effort to succeed”. i.e., what would be the process.

The actual name? That comes later, after identifying things we, as a project, would need to do to even vet potential names.

But people sitting around joking (or even semi-seriously discussing) around what the name could be? That’s certainly “on-topic” for open chat.

If you no longer wish to follow it, that’s easy:

  1. Click the control at the bottom of the discussion that says “Tracking” and change it to “Muted”.

That’s it.

Only tangentially related, but a FOSS game recently changed it’s name and I think we could take notes on how they did it.

Brought to my attention by the one and only ( Brodie Robertson)

Hi All,

In case anyone missed, this topic has been discussed on the recent conference.
