New name for openSUSE as requested by SUSE

no offense taken.
here are a couple of two syllable names:

MEZA
VARA
ZYRA
TERA

or maybe a direct wink at SUSE but easily distinguishable:

CRUSE
Community respektiert unabhängige Software Entwicklung , or possibly:
Community respektiert unabhängige Systementwicklung und Erfahrungsaustausch.

Nonsense. S.u.S.E. renamed itself to SUSE, and now you want to go back to some German acronym? No way. Not gonna happen.

Also nonsense. It is not about the distros, it’s about the Project.
I also do not understand why one would create an account just to come up with names for a Project that one has had zero involvement with so far. If someone wants to contribute somehow, there are other prioritiies than some fancy name.

I don’t know why but CRUSE sounds worse than SUSE, if you know what i’m referring to…

Nobody is talking about SUSE renaming itself.

I mean, at this stage, nobody’s really talking about the openSUSE Project being renamed, either. The idea was floated almost a year ago, and it doesn’t really seem that anything has visibly happened or changed as a result of it.

As noted in the staff notice that is now at the top of this long topic, there is absolutely nothing official about any of this discussion. It’s just a bunch of fans bikeshedding about something that came up almost a year ago.

To be correct, it’s over a year ago. ( oSC24 in June last year ). In the background almost 2 years ago.

No. …but today I learned something new. (Not just a non-native English speaker, but also unfamiliar with old Italian culture).

I am sorry if I offended in some way. I am new here and thought that the name suggestions were just a bit of fun and a good entry point, where I could do little wrong.
I obviously was mistaken.
I’ll leave you to it. Have a nice day.

No problem. Enjoy your time here.

I was just making a Romeo and Juliet reference lol. Two households, both alike in dignity in fair Verona, where we lay our scene, from ancient grudge break to new mutiny where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.

*I did find the reference to Shakespeare stuffed away deep down among some really old memories. …and it took a while…

Even getting old has downsides.

The new name for the project should be able to immediately convey two central ideas:

  1. It is an open, community project, fundamentally distinct from any commercial entreprise.
  2. It is deeply intertwined with, and actively supported by, a well-established company (SUSE).

Hence imo the new name of openSUSE should be: openSUSE.

The original mailing list discussion (following a talk at oSC 2024). It seems to have fizzled out…no real traction since last year.

How about something like 24/7OS as a name? Rock solid, works 24/7 for me! And would be quite unique I guess?

Too long to pronounce, imho.

“Twen-Tee-Four-Oh-Ess”
“Oh-Pen-Sue-Seh”

It is not about the distros, it is about the openSUSE Project.

Didn’t even get it right.

“Twen-Tee-Four-Seh-Venn-Oh-Ess”

This coughing is killing braincells…

The name of the project should be considered as something like a prefix, imho. Something to put before the names and versions and architectures of the different distributions that the project build and maintain.

…and as sort-of-a-prefix it would be good to keep it short – two or three syllables.

  • Deb-E-Anne
