Okay, i seem to have this same problem over and over. I know its a bit repetitive but, Its a different machine and It won’t even scan the network this time. I’ve tried to get it to prompt for firmware. But it won’t. I’ve entered commands like
yast2 -i ipw-firmware
Please help, I need to get this machine online to replace another that is failing. I thought setting up a newer machine would be easier. I thought wrong, however, Shouldn’t it be scanning? If theres a cmd for scanning i’ll do anything. I need to troubleshoot this ASAP.
I’m gathering the information about the machine, sorry. Its a bit harder to get since its not on the internet. The network card i believe is RTL-8185 in YAST2
lspci -nnk | grep "RTL"
Returned the result of ::
RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller
This doesn’t look like the output of the command. It should be something like this :
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) [168c:002b] (rev 01)
Subsystem: AzureWave Device [1a3b:1089]
Kernel driver in use: ath9k
Just get a pendrive, save the output to a text file and post it here.
What is the output of this command ?
/usr/sbin/iwlist scan
ugh, So complicated. Give me a few minutes. I just got back, I need to find a pendrive. Oh and i entered the iwlist command: on wlan0:
Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

It should work out of the box
Make sure you have kernel-firmware installed
Ok, I’ll just run a install incase its not there.
Ya, still not scanning for networks.
Snippet from “iwlist scan”
wlan0 No Scan Results
Maybe the radio is off ?
Please try this command :
rfkill unblock all
or look for some hardware switch on the PC to enable it. Rfkill might not be installed by default. In that case you need to somehow copy the required .rpm to the machine having problems and install using rpm.
I just think its not scanning. Its saying no scan results
I’m very confused as to why this is. When it was windows it worked perfectly. However, I don’t like windows so i changed it to linux…
Do you still have windows installed ? If yes can you boot to windows, enable all wireless stuff (bluetooth, wifi) and reboot to linux ? Another thing you might try is a complete poweroff for something like 5 minutes (remove the battery if it’s a laptop or unplug the power cable if it’s a desktop). I’ve got no idea why but sometimes it helps.
I’m going to try a reinstall in a minute. I just need to try that. Maybe something went wrong during the PXE Install
