New Installation of 12.3 on new computer.

Hello. I’m planning to install openSUSE 12.3 (not 13.1) 64 bit on a computer I’m building. I’ll be using an Intel i5 4xxx cpu on an Asus Plus Z87 MB. I’m having trouble determining the correct file to download and burn for this install. Which file should I use and which download site should I go to? I want to make sure I install the correct system the first time as I don’t yet know which files go with these new processors.

Current system:
P4 2.4Ghz (12 yrs old single core) on Asus P4PE w/2 GB ram (max on board)
openSUSE 12.2 32 bit KDE
I switched to Linus about 5 yrs ago and wouldn’t use anything else now.

Hi
Since your wanting KDE, check the 64bit radio button and grab the KDE iso image from;

http://software.opensuse.org/123/en

Burn that to a DVD or create a usb device with the iso image and install away…

I’d plan on using 13.1 if you’re going to be making use of the intergrated Intel video … 12.3 ootb would be **** for Haswell

Edit: The forum software is being overly pedantic and censored my use of “c r a p” … stupid crappy software

Thanks Tyler_K. I was leaning away from 13.1 because I read how it’s going to have a very short update cycle and it was recommended against for that reason. I don’t know if oS is going to be going that way from now on but the old update cycle is ok for me. How is it supposed to go in the future? I’m not sure of the integrated graphics. I want o build a HTPC but not gaminf. I’m looking at how it’s beneficial to have some 3d capability even for HD Video and also for potential future use. So I’m ok with using on board graphics for now until I decide on a card which I need to save for anyway. I’m also planning to add a good sound card to combine my integrated power amp with. It’s S/N is rated at 100db so I don’t need to spend too much. The Sound Blaster ZxR looks good but a bit pricey but has the optional module for connection to a amplifier which is what I can use. Asus has the Xonar Essence line which is good but pricier still. Do you know of either of these?

As far as I heard, 13.1 will be a version of long term support.

Using intel onboard graphics is just perfect when using openSUSE!
Don’t worry about any Kernel updates!
Don’t bother with (re-) installing proprietary graphics drivers!
It will just run!

That’s another question, that would best be posed in another thread.

I think there may be some problems with that sound card you should do a search on the multimedia section here

Where did you read that? On the contrary, it will have a longer update
cycle than usual.

For two reasons: one, that 13.2 is going to be delayed several months.
two, it has been designated as a target for the Evergreen project. Ie,
it will have a minimum support cycle of 3 years.

I’d like to know where/who told you about that short update cycle!
