new installation grub and wifi problems

What a frustrating experience!

I’ve been trying and liking the live cd gnome version of opensuse, so thought I’d go ahead and install it on my hp pavilion dm1. The wifi worked without problems on the live cd, so imagine my surprise when there wasn’t even a wifi bar on the installed version - no account of tinkering with network settings could allow me to switch it on.

No problem, I thought - I’ll just pop back into windows and work from there for a bit. But openshite has managed to ruin that for me too - when I choose to boot into windows, GRUB just gives me an error message and I have to restart.

Any ideas about fixing my bootloader so I can at least use windows? The wifi issue will have to wait 'til I’m home.

Run YaST->Network->Network Settings and switch to “User-controlled with NetworkManager” on the “Global Options” tab. Then the wifi bar should show up, if it was working on the LiveCD.

Can’t boot into Windows though - keep getting ‘A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl Alt Delete to restart’ whenever I select Windows 7 from the grub2 bootloader. Do I need to reconfigure the settings in grub somehow?

FYI, there was a bug in 12.3 network that just required a reboot.

When we have the fdisk info or if fdisk doesn’t work you may use

parted -l

You have to be su -

Apparently you have two Windows 7 entries in the boot menu:
“Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda1)” and “Windows 7 (loader) (on /dev/sda2)”

Have you tried both?

When allowed to do so, Windows 7/8 creates two partitions. The first i small and is the boot one while the second is large and is the rest of Windows. The fdisk readout shows that grub is loaded in sda4 or the MBR, but not sure. I think you boot /dev/sda4 to run Windows. Have a look at my grub 2 bash script for help.

You mean /dev/sda1 I guess?

/dev/sda4 is just a logical partition that holds the 3 Linux partitions.
But yes, grub2 is apparently located there.

The flag is on the extended, that’s usual in openSUSE
If the OP examines the two partitions from openSUSE, see which contains ‘bootmgr’
My grub is written to MBR and I bet the OP’s is too.

I’ve had a look at this, and I’m afraid I’m none the wiser as to what I should try…

I have tried both windows boot options - both give the same result.

My program grub2cmd option 5 allows you to manually select the Windows boot partition which I think is /dev/sda1. Man you got to use the help provided. I am not in front of your PC to help.

Turns out it was as simple as switching to GRUB from GRUB2 in YaST.
