Hello,
I recently started using SUSE Linux 11.1 on a VMware workstation; however, I noticed that some applications that worked in 11.0 don’t work in 11.1. Not wanting to be bothered with investigating which settings are to blame for the situation, I am considering updating the 11.0 installation to 11.1. QUESTION 1: Is this advisable? Actually, I have already attempted doing this, but I stopped after encountering the following message in the update process:
“Some partitions on /dev/sda2 are mounted by kernel-device name. This is not reliable for the update since kernel-device names are not persistent. It is strongly recommended to start the old system and change the mount-by method to any other method for all partitions.”
QUESTION 2: Can somebody give me directions for performing this change?

It’s always better/safer to do a fresh new installation, but if (like me) you don’t want to spend a lot of time to re-configure everything to your need, try updating.
I did that too, and I’m overall satisfied. Some problems I had with 11.0 (eg.: sound) are gone, and 11.1 is more stable. There are some new bugs however, but non-blocking ones for me (I can live with them for now):
(I was faced with a bug in the 11.1 installer - may happen in some cases when updating a system installed on more than two HD - but I got help to workaround this. The story is here: Update fails: partitions cannot be mounted - openSUSE Forums)
Again, I’m satisfied by my decision to go for update.
Open Yast >> Partitioner
Check the column “Mounted By” and change to value to “ID” where needed.
Hello,
Thanks for your post. I performed the upgrade, and it seems to work ( well, almost evince does not work after upgrade - openSUSE Forums ). The “mount by” parameter seems to be irrelevant (perhaps because it is a virtual machine); when I changed it, it returned to the old value after reboot. Then I simply ignored the “mount by” warning. So far, so good.
