new install problems

Just installed opensuse 11.1 Kernal 2.6.27.7-9-pae (tty1)

On the first bootup I see the gui for a split second then it goes back to a command prompt screen - I see all the commands scrolling and then after 2 minutes get a linux login: prompt

I have install the gnome interface and expected this to come up.

not really sure what I am doing now as I’m new to this and my login details aren’t working.

Any suggestions? should I reformat and install again? maybe use the other interface?

Could it be a graphics problem - I never did find the correct graphics drive wil XP?

Its a modded Dell desktop with a duron 800mHz and about 350mb ram. Some old unidentifiable graphics card!

Did you try failsafe boot option?
or try…

At the login type your user name then your password (password does not display as you type) just type and hit enter again

Next try typing this: startx

If that doesn’t work and you fall back to a prompt, do this

Switch to su by typing **su **and your root password
then do this:

sax -r -m 0=vesa

then reboot

see how you get on

Yes I did try failsafe - Same result.

Login incorrect on both my login name and using su.

I suppose I could have mistyped my password? i might be wrong but I dont remember a retype you password field?

Can I still go back and reinstall if I don’t know the root password?

You can re-install no problem

see you in an hour then!!!

Should I try the other “interface” not sure if thats the right term. But not Gnome - the other one

Could that me my problem??

done some research and it seems kde is only suitable for 1gHz processors?

Should I give this a miss and retry Gnome again

You may struggle
Sysreqs - openSUSE

But try ‘other’ select XFCE

is XFCE what I would have had on my Acer One with Linpus? I just dumped that in favour of linux mint because I didn’t get on with it.

No. Linpus is a Fedora based product from Taiwan I think

XFCE is if anything like gnome
Xfce - Desktop Environment

second install has worked fine!!

Thanks for the help
