I’ve been trying to get an install of openSUSE 12.3 up and running on my desktop. The install goes perfectly, and boots up into the desktop fine. I just need to install the nvidia driver because the nouveau driver runs my fan constantly at high speed.
Next, I go to install the nvidia drivers through the repository (SDB:NVIDIA drivers - openSUSE), and the driver install seems to work fine. The installer exits successfully, and tells me that I need to restart before the nvidia driver can be used.
After restarting, my computer boots to the login screen. When I login, the graphics driver crashes when trying to load the Gnome desktop. I’m able to jump to a different run level (ctrl+alt+F3), but I don’t know how to fix the problem from there. I’ve seen that some people fixed issues by adding themselves to the video group (I have not tried this), but their errors do not seem to be this severe.
Processor: Intel Core i7
Graphics Card: Nvidia GTS 250
Installed driver/package: x11-video-nvidiaG02
Desktop Environment: Gnome
I know that this system should work fine with openSUSE 12.3. I’ve been using openSUSE on it since 11.4, and I’ve never had a problem like this before. It was working perfectly with 12.2 a week ago (and currently working fine with a temporary install of Linux Mint). Does anyone know how to fix this issue? I’m anxious to get rid of this Mint install and go back to openSUSE.
