New install of 11.4 wont boot without cd

I just did a new install of open suse 11.4 32 bit. it all went well, but it would not boot up, it just freezes at the geco splash screen before the white line starts to move.

But it will work if i have the install dvd in the drive.

And every time i try to boot without it it freezes, but workes fine with it in the drive.

Any ideas?

Hi,

you mean that you boot on the liveCD, is that it ?

  1. Did you check the integrity (md5sum) of the ISO you downloaded ?
  2. What is your graphic card ?

No I think he means it boots the HD ok from the CD but not by itself. Sounds like GRUB didn’t get properly installed.

OP I would boot it up and rerun the boot loader installation from YaST.

If that doesn’t work you need to post some info about your disk partitioning and people can examine it. That’s for later.

Yeah, you’re probably right.

Or reinstall GRUB like this : Re-Install Grub Quickly with Parted Magic

as per above, yes i am booting from the hdd, it is the first in the boot order, i just need to have the cd in or it wont boot.

I reinstalled grub but still no go. It will boot if i select failsafe or have the cd in while I boot, if i have a line in /etc/fstab to load a iscsi drive that was not available it woud start to boot till it comes up with the missing drive, further then normal. as soon as I remove the line from fstab and boot normaly it will freeze up as soon as the boot splash comes us

Your setup is advanced since you mention iscsi. You should post details of your fstab and other info.

Do you have an iscsi driver in the initrd I wonder. Or listed in the modules to load after boot. If you don’t know what that means perhaps you should find out.

The iscsi was just a test I was doing, it was simply mounted as “/iscsi” using the built in iscsi initiator, it is now removed from fstab and the fstab is back to the default. I think I will just reinstall tonight and see if it works…though it does work in failsafe mode so i am not sure

Consider also installing with the boot code ‘nomodeset’.

Don’t forget to read the openSUSE-11.4 release noes.

If asking for help, be certain to advise exactly what graphics hardware you have in any help request.

So, disable the splash.
