New install of 11.4 and Flash Video Flashes (Literally)

Hello. I have just done a clean install of 64 bit 11.4. To the best of my knowledge I have done all of the repository updates (Packman, etc.). I also did the “one click” multimedia update from the multimedia forum here.

Now when I try to view a flash video from the internet (e.g. YouTube) the picture flashes with white boxes and rectangles of various sizes. For example, see this video: FIFA.com - Australia 3:2 Equatorial Guinea

I get a box of white blocking the center of the picture. And if I move my cursor over the video the entire lower right hand quadrant (about 25% of the screen area) flashes with white boxes and rectangles of various sizes.

I have flash V 10. 3.181.26 installed. I see that there is a newer version on the Adobe website, but when I tried to install that I got an error message that some elements were missing and the installation could not be done.

Thanks for your help.

Please make sure you have not had gnash installed by accident

Thx. for reply.

gnash was not installed.

I followed your instructions as indicated above. But when I then tried to play the same video I was told I needed to have Flash. (I have a screen shot but I don’t see anywhere here to attach a picture.)

Did I misunderstand and now do I need to go back and reinstall those two files I previously deleted (flash)?
Thx

KDE
GeForce 8200
AMD Athlon II X2 240 processor
4GB RAM

I do not know what driver is installed (don’t even know if it’s an NVidia driver). Where is that information kept in 11.4 and I’ll report it.

Hmmm, maybe this is it?
I looked in the applications launcher > configure NVidia X Server settings > X Server Information and I see:
NVIDIA Driver Version 270.41.06

Does that help?

Thx

I followed your instructions as indicated above.
If you had, it would work

So do I need to reinstall Flash using YaST2, or was copying that file enough that I should now be able to view Flash videos?

Thx for clarification.

The flash available in Yast is 32 bit and does work (but some sites, like IMDB has strange squares etc…as you describe).
The flash fix I gave you, which requires you to remove the 32 bit version + the flash-pullin, is a 64 bit version of flash and it requires you manually update it as and when updates are available at the download page in the guide.
The file you extract from the archive is libflashplayer.so and is copied to /usr/lib64/browser-plugins, the code to do that is in the guide but you must be su
Did you become su in the terminal?
Or if you use KDE, use the Dolphin Super User file manager to copy the file.

Thx, caf. I appreciate the reply.

To answer your questions and bring you up to date…

  1. I did become su in the terminal and I did copy and paste your instructions into the terminal, so no typos.

And I did get the libflashplayer.so file you referenced. However, maybe I pulled it from the wrong place?

I went to the “square” page in your link and found the following after scrolling down:

64-bit Release Flash Player Downloads

Download active-x for 64-bit Windows — for Internet Explorer only (EXE, 3.2 MB)
Download plug-in for 64-bit Windows — for all other browsers (EXE, 3.2 MB)
Download plug-in for 64-bit Mac OS X (DMG, 8.7 MB)
Download plug-in for 64-bit Linux (TAR.GZ, 4.1 MB)

I, of course, selected the TAR.GZ and extracted the libflashplayer.so file.

Did I get the file from the right place?

  1. I had some other issues with my installation, so given that and the fact that flash was not working I did another clean install. (I know, I know, experienced penguins don’t like that, but I was getting nowhere and increasingly frustrated.)

  2. After doing the clean install I did NOT get your suggested import of the libflashplayer.so file because I got a message through YaST that there was an update of flashplayer available. So I thought maybe this was the fix I needed. I let YaST install the new flashplayer (now I have version 10.3.181.34-1.2.1).

However, the problem with the squares and flashing persists. :frowning:

So do you suggest I try again to install the libflashplayer.so file from the “square” website? (And did I pull it from the right place?)

Or is there an inherent problem with flash on certain websites (as you seem to indicate) that I’ll just have to live with until a fix is released?

Many thanks for your patience and guidance.

socref

Yes the file is from the right place.
There are inherent issues on some sites with the flash shipped in openSUSE repos (ATM anyway)
But flash should mostly work

For me, I delete flash-pullin and flash-player and download flash-square manually, as we have already discussed.
There is no harm trying it again, though I should point out that using it presents more of a security risk (in that it is not updated as regularly), but I have not had any problems, though I do have relatively safe browsing habits

Thanks again.

I’ll retry adding flash-square and let you know.

If you’ve problems with displaying flash content, try a newer version of the nspluginwrapper. You can find my packages for 11.3 and 11.4 here: https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=nspluginwrapper&project=home%3Aprodigy7
The new version solves my problems!

Hello, and thanks for the reply. Just want to be sure I understand. (I am not a sophisticated user.)

I go here: Index of /repositories/home:/prodigy7/openSUSE_11.4/x86_64

and download the rpm: nspluginwrapper-1.4.2-52.1.x86_64.rpm

Then I click on the .rpm and it will install automatically? Correct?

Then once installed I should enter the following at a terminal:

ldconfig
SuSEconfig

Correct?

Thx
socref

Simply add this repository and the install the newer version. Alternatively, uninstall the old version, then install the RPM. (rpm -Uhv <filename> with root user)

SOLVED!!

Many thanks, prodigy. That eliminated the flashing.

I was not able to figure out how to add your repository, so I deleted the nspluginwrapper and installed your new .rpm.

However I was momentarily frustrated when I tested but the flashing was still there. It was only after a reboot that the problem went away.

Now all is well. Again, thanks.
