New Guy on the Block

Hi all, hope this is the right spot in the forums to post an introduction. My name is Tom and I’ve been using Linux for about a year and a half. I keep hearing how great openSUSE is, so yesterday I took the plunge and installed 11.4 KDE. To say I am impressed would be an understatement. Everything I needed as far as flash, codecs and addidtional apps such as Google Earth were all a breeze to install. The biggest surprise to me was installing the driver for my ATI HD4200 graphics. Every distro I have tried previously was a big fail at installing the proprietary driver so that it works properly. With openSUSE it installed and worked correctly first try. I am here to stay if you’ll have me.

As an aside, my other OS is Linux Mint Debian Edition, which I am also very pleased with. I think I’m beginning to like RPM better than DEB, but I need to keep my hands on DEB as I’m a Forum Moderator over at Linux Mint.

Welcome Tom. Your experience with Mint is bound to be leveraged here!

Hi Tom,

Welcome to the openSUSE world. Hope you’ll enjoy your stay.

Welcome tdockery97 to the openSUSE forums. Trying to see how it is on the other side of the fence? Our lips will be sealed here, guarantied. So you sound like an experience Linux user, but do not hesitate to ask for help or guidance. It is hard to know it all, even though a few here might. lol!

Thank You,

Joining the others, welcome!

Thanks for the welcome. Don’t worry jdmcdaniel3, I don’t keep my use of another OS a secret. We even have members over there who only use Slackware.:open_mouth: From what I have seen here so far, the openSUSE community appears just as friendly.

welcome Tom!

I also changed over from the .deb side (Ubuntu and also Mint) to OpenSuse recently. I also play around a lot with other distros and Mint (normal Mint and also LMDE) was one of the best I have ever seen, beside OpenSuse of course

Hey Man,

I see you in Mint as I use it too and my Son also.
Welcome here. I know you are already very experienced, but nevertheless it’s not easy in a strange environment. So don’t be shy about asking for advice, there are plenty of seasoned SUSE users here. I can probably include myself in that category.

Some advice:
There is a huge number of community repos available but please keep them to a minimum, as it can lead to complications.
Typically I would say you should have the default: Oss, Non-Oss, Update

  • Packman, libdvdcss and the maybe a graphics (ATI or NVIDIA) repo. And that’s it.

Enjoy

Let me also welcome you, stranger from a parallel universe. I am as well one
of the people here who use mint at home besides openSUSE (which is and
likely ever will be my main distro) and on an older netbook also pure debian
testing.
I hope you will have a lot of fun with oS and of course there is some
learning curve because things are different compared to debian based systems
but for an expierienced linux user nothing that will be really difficult.
