New Forum Home Page Layout

As you can see we have a new forum home page layout. As we have added additional language specific areas to our forums, the home page had grown unwieldy. This new layout has approximately the same information on the page, but in a cleaner, easier to view and navigate style. We’ve also added a collapsible sidebar which shows new information in some specific areas of our forums.

The forums staff hopes these small changes will make navigating our forums from the home page a bit easier. :peace:

Thanks & Peace to you too, man. What a surprise, back to work after diner break, and there it is… I love it

Unwieldy for who? Before it was easy to collapse non-english language forum group on the home page. That no longer works, does it? Clicking on the arrow, top right of each group appears to to do nothing here.

Further to that, I can only collapse the english forum list, but that’s the one I don’t want to collapse. Is it a bug?

Great new layout it will take some time getting used to for me but I am already loving it

It is a bug in our current version of vBulletin. It is fixed in the next version so we just have to upgrade.

Forum has been getting more difficult to navigate, it has gotten to where I even dread seeing what changes will be made with each visit, I visit less and less often. Shame to see what was a simple and straight forward easy to navigate forum turn into what it has. A mish mash page that just looks terrible and is not contrary to what some may think, is not easier to navigate. :’(

Might I suggest you try switching to the newsgroups instead of the forums?

Ok Kim. Thanks for the quick response. ;D

Well, while we recognize that we’re not going to please everyone, what
suggestions would you make to improve navigation? Suggestions are always
better than just saying “it stinks”. We might be able to accommodate
some of those suggestions if you were to make some.

No you won’t. I have made them before, and they were just shrugged off, no sense in making them again.

How about the sidebar referring to Howtos for New Users? I would have thought advanced users would already know where to find the advanced Howtos.

OK, so then how shall we take your complaint?

Not a bad idea, let me see if that’s something we can do.

A new surprise again?..hmmmm
This morning i logged into my blog admin area, and was not a happy admin to see that there are many URL’s broken. I use links from this forum in my blog for users to get help here and also use it for references. But wait, they are broken now, WHY?..because the URL pattern changes now, a simple example:
OLD one,
http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/pre-release-beta/
New one,
Pre-Release/Beta
followed by many more…
I am not saying, to keep it just because i am linking to it. How many other users will link to this forum topics?
And how about the SEO thing, how about Google indexing, isn’t it a bad impression to have changing it frequently like that. Is it hard coded to redirect urls from old to new in .htaccess file?, i guess not yet. Now if some one came through a search engine, might get this message:

Invalid Forum specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator

Just because that search engine does not index it yet, when it will index it, no one knows.

Changing the layout is fine, but why it always effect the URLs?, i guess it should not effect it at all… :frowning:

Thanks

For me the change is generally for the better, however blue writings on blue background IMHO is not easily readable.

Would it be possible to change the background or links colour to something else than blue ?
Thanks a lot in advance. Looking forward to changes.

Best regards,
Greg

Just click the link “get technical help” or the link “other forums”, depending whether you want the tech forums or the non-tech forums, and you’ll see a broad expanse similar to how it was 18 months ago, in the beginning. You’ll probably be happy about that because we made them just for you Bruce (OK and also for the other English speakers lol).

I am absolutely not happy with it. I would like to see a working selection of only the choosed language.

Take it any way you want, with a grain of salt or with the same attitude as before, the Oh well and a shrug.

Exactly the kind of respsonse and attitude I expected here. And is exactly why I don’t bother making suggestions. It really is a sad state that one of my favorite forums has become I place I choose not to visit as much as I used to, and not just because of forum “layout”.
