New Computer... what hardware?

I want to build a new PC, with a Intel Core2 Quad processor, but i need help to choose the mother board and another components. Please help me.

My general idea is:

  • Intel Core2 Quad 2.4Ghz
  • 1 HDD 80GB (OS and apps)
  • 1 HDD 500GB (data)
  • 4 or 8 Gb RAM
  • MotherBoard ¿?
  • Video Card ¿?

This hardware because i need install Win XP (because i need to my work) and Linux Suse or Fedora… I’m new in Linux systems, fos that I need your help to choose the better hardware.

Thanks for all your help an ideas.

I think most people here run older hardware, so we may not be the best ones to ask.

As a general proposition, I would avoid buying anything that has not been out already for 6 months or so, to maximize the chances it will be supported.

Nvidia used to be the automatic choice for video card in Linux, and still pretty much is. However, the ATI drivers have improved quite a bit over the last year or two so don’t rule them out.

Double check to confirm that quad core processors are supported, if you have not already.

Good luck, and hopefully someone else will come along to post some more specific recommendations.

This a starting point but not a comprehensive list as it relies on users to complete it:
Hardware - openSUSE

also
Hardware for Linux - Home

My newest box is:
Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DQ6 Motherboard
AMD athlon 64*2 6000
8 GB DDR2 663 RAM
ATI 4850HD Radeon Graphics card
160 GB Hard drive - os & apps
500 GB hard drive - data and virtual machines
The most troublesome thing in amongst this lot is the graphics, when running in desktop effects mode video playback constantly flashes (until I manually change the output to X11 in MPlayer and Google Earth is also constantly flashing in the desktop effects mode. Turn off desktop effects and all is well. Also sometimes for no apparent reason the computer needs 2 or 3 “goes” before getting the display working upon cold boots. There does not seem to be any difference between manually installing the driver or letting openSuSe do it with YAST. I have a windows box running also so I will move the ATI card to it and get an Nvidia for this box.
I am also having an issue with the USB on this box, when I connect a drive to it I only get <1MB per second transfer speed until I rmmod ehci-hcd and modprobe ehci-hcd it back again then it is fine. I think this is related to kernel and RAM but unsure. There is a post in this forum for this issue.
I dont think there are any other issues… sound works fine, network etc.
It’s most enjoyable putting a new box together, I generally treat myself to a new one every 2 years.
Cheers, Peter.

I bet if those desktop effects were turned off, that ATI card would perform flawlessly.

I had forgotten about all the problems ATI cards have with running desktop effects, but I think Nvidia cards have at least some problems running them as well. I don’t use them at all myself.

As far as bugs with other hardware components goes, these can be fun to figure out sometimes, provided there is a solution at the end. That seems to be what Linux is all about, working through various bugs and (usually) finding a solution, then moving on to the next bug.

Yes, your right. (as I think mentioned in the previous post) With no desktop effects there are no problems with graphics on this box using the ATI card. I like using the desktop effects so I can run emerald themes, much nicer than the standard ones. Wobbly windows etc have never done all that much for me. So the windows box will get a graphics card upgrade and I’ll get to play around with a nice new 9800 on this box.
And once again yes… that’s all the fun of building the new box, getting it all working nicely. I must say that in this regard, OpenSuSe 11 would have to be the most boring Linux distro that I’ve used in recent times! Which is part of the reason I went with the ATI card on this box, I had read up a fair bit on the advances made in recent times on the ATI drivers and wanted to try one out for myself.
Cheers, Peter.

Thanks for your ideas and advice.
Indeed as he said PMC is fun to build your own CPU and find this kind of details to resolve, by the way thanks CAF496, these are good link to give me an idea!
Every day I go deep more in the Linux world and for now it appears that one of the more MB that recommended to me is the ASUS P5K and INTEL DG33TL you think that? and to the graphics card as saying Foresthill believe that Nvidia is the most mentioned but I’m still undecided, I hope that more people of their opinion and their help, and I’ll tell them as will my new PC, greetings to all!

If you dont use it for any professional use.
If you dont want to wait for the update of kernel to suit the new hard ware, I think you gotta get an old version of PC, or you gotta keep on waiting and looking for new hardware Support.

that’s the point VSU, I try to apply in my work, but I need WinXP too, my idea is install WinXP, Suse, and Mac Leopard

cheers and thank’s for your help.
