New 12.1 x86-32 LXDE desktop install. Online Update downloads fail!

Hello List, Moderators! I just installed 12.1 from a DVD that has successfully installed on other boxes. My network BW here is only 256Kbits/secs, but it works well. Let me put my question here and let the details of my problem follow. I think the transition to 12.2 has messed up some of the 12.1 servers/mirrors that Online Update uses. In that case can I get my 12.1 updated some other way? Alternately, maybe this stalled download behavior is symptomatic of some know problem! In trying to update my 12.1 to the current level Yast > Sw > Online Update finds several hundred patches and updates. If I accept the entire list, the update starts with openSuse English manpages. That file is smaller than 10MB. It’s install download races to 99% and quits. That repeats three times and gives the option of abort, retry, or skip. Retry repeats the process, skip brings up the next update which also fails at 90% or greater and that process repeats to the prompt. Abort kills everything including any updates in the session that may have somehow managed to download and install. Going thru the laborious process of negating all of the suggested updates (All in the List > do not install), I can cherry pick some single updates and get them to install, but there’s several hundred more to go! Some individually updates like firefox and thunderbird, altho quite large complete fine. Just for grins, I downloaded the OpenOffice rpm from openoffice.org which tho very large by comparison worked fine. While Online Update is spinning helplessly on a stalled download, I can browse or get my email with plenty of network BW to spare. heboland.

First, can you share the results of:

zypper repos -u

With all my fresh installs, I generally use zypper from the command line (zypper is what YaST software management uses) and start with the two commands as root:

zypper up libzypp zypper
zypper up

I’ve noticed that every time I install from the DVD, the repositories are not updated properly. The system starts with a repository that points to the installation media you used to install like the USB or DVD instead of pointing to the remote repositories from download.opensuse.org

That repository needs to be removed and the re-added with the needed openSUSE url.

i do not think that is the source of your problem…instead i think you
have some conflicting repos open

please show us the terminal output and input from

zypper lr -d
df -hlT
uname -a
cat /etc/SuSE-release

copy/paste the in/output back to this thread using the instructions
here: http://goo.gl/i3wnr

oh! by “In trying to update my 12.1 to the current level” do you mean
running YaST Online Update?
or are you doing something with YaST Software Management? (what?)
or zypper?? (what commands are you using?)

Thanks guys!

My attempt to reply with the code trashed the whole reply. Everything looked proper, but this time I want to put the code in a subsequent reply.

First, the missing white space in my original post happened when I went to review the post. I posted that from my other computer which somehow has that problem. Is that white stripping behavior a setting?

Yes I have been using Yast > Software > Online Update to bring my new 12.1 install up to date. I know from my other system that the libre office on Online Update is broke, so I have it protected in the Software Management > versions > protect. I assume zypper would respect that.

I’ll post this now and follow it up with a post of the code you asked for. heboland.

Don’t forget to use code tags.

Posting in Code Tags - A Guide

Hi Robin, I did use the tags! I didn’t type in the top code word.

I see now the code past point needs to move 0.1mm left to get both code labels. heboland

How’s that?

And there it is! That rogue repository that does not get removed after initial installation.

See how it looks for the repo from the “cd”. I bet that CD isn’t in the tray anymore, or can provide updates at all!

So what’s happening here is when your PC tries to update it look first in that evil repo (because that’s where a lot of system packages came from in the first place), when it can’t find them, it doesn’t bother to look else where.

It doesn’t bother to look else where because that is just zypper doing its job. Zypper knows what repo every package came from and will only download updates for that package from that repo.

**You can just remove that offending repo, then re-add it with the new url so that it doesn’t point to the CD anymore.
**
As root, first remove the repo:

zypper rr 3

Add the new repo:

zypper ar -n openSUSE-12.1-Updates http://download.opensuse.org/update/12.1/ repo-update

Then just try to update again:

zypper clean -mM
zypper up

The*** zypper clean*** (not required) command will purge your old metadata records and when you do the zypper up command, it should go well.

Thanks saultdon!

I took one liberty from your instructions. Rather the zypper rr 3, I went into Yast > Software > Software Repositories and unchecked the enable box for the DVD. If that’s equivalent, the the rest of this should apply.

I had another nice reply typed up that ended up this way:

"Bad Gateway!

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.

The proxy server could not handle the request POST /newreply.php.

Reason: Error reading from remote server"

It’s not worth typing much here when it keeps getting trashed. Let me attempt to include the code that followed from your commands. Again the man download reached 98% before retrying. heboland.

My apologies! Looks like you don’t even have to add that repo-update again. You can remove the repo-update we created. It’s a duplicate now.

The only thing that had to get done was removing the old updates repo that was looking for packages on the cd. That’s done.

But now I’m not sure why you are getting an internet connection issue…

Sometimes running zypper with the -vv flag gives a little insight as to what’s going on.

Maybe try to run the update after you’ve removed that duplicate update repo with the -vv flag:

zypper -vv up

Then again, that won’t really say too much about what is happening when it fetches the RPM file… Your other warning sounds interesting about the bad gateway or proxy issue.

I’m not sure if there is a way to enable the same verbose output so you can see it in YaST - that would be nice.

Thanks saultdon!

The network issue is the real problem! Again rather than the zypper rr of the duplicate update repository, I used the Yast > Software > Software Repositories and unchecked the enable box on the bottom entry.

If this post makes it I would also like to know how to avoid the white space strip that happened on my original message.

So in the code, look at the download lines. When the download gets to 98% the data rate drops from 28kB/sec to zero. While zypper is setting there spinning, I downloaded my email on this same machine.

My machine can reach my ISP and download my mail.

I’m going to post this and then follow with the code again! heboland

It seems to me that I don’t have network access to opensuse.org while I still have other access.

No, my request to use code tags I wrote before you posted, correctly as far as I can see, but
my post reached you later, and you thought I was asking you to repost. Sorry.

Re the repo that is a reference to the DVD: it is fine to have it and it never caused a problem
to me. It would be a problem if it referred to another oS version.

I see that you are using plain “su”. Do not do that, use “su -”, with the dash. It is important.

I see in some of the output the word “proxy”. Are you using a proxy? Are you inside a corporate
network of some short, school, club, etc? If not, make sure that yast is configured to not use
a proxy in sysconfig.

To diagnose yast/zypper problems it is important to also look at the logs, often they explain
the real problem.

Then there are some network cards that have problems with Linux. There is one in particular
that just gets stuck always at a particular point of a certain download, and works fine with
the rest of downloads: it simply gets stuck on a particular sequence of bytes:

Bug 688454 - Can’t download
particular packages from update repositories except in failsafe mode.

Then I heard recently of another problem:

Bug 769211 - e1000e NIC stops
working all the time

And I have the vague feeling there is another one, but I didn’t make a note of it. Not sure.

Hi Robin!

I tried the su - this time. No change. Looked at the bugs. I don’t have vget installed, nor is it available from my configured repositories. This is a personal machine without any proxies.

Is vget a way to download an update file to be saved as a file? Maybe I could try to vget something failing on my other computer. Also one of you guys could try to download it also to see if it starves out!

My lan card is an onboard 3c905C-TX/TX-M[Tornado] DHCP4.

A week ago I went thru this same ordeal, but once the planets were in the proper alignment and the update finished. The next night that hard drive crashed. Only the update 12.1 was lost, but this update can work on this HW if this throttling stops!

The throttling is a taper down rather than a stop. On this file the throttling starts around 98%. After it hits 0b/s, a little more data trickles in at 5b/s or so. The behavior reminds me of trying to download a windows driver from a webpage that’s expecting something they didn’t get.

A poison pill kills the download just as it’s finishing.

I can find and Taboo this english manpage from the update list in Yast > Software > Online Update, but the problem just moves to another manpage or the release notes. If I taboo all of these, the problem moves to the kernel FW download.

In the original post of this thread, I mentioned in that clot of black print that the mozilla stuff updates OK. I think the stuff that works comes from subnets on your end that are different from the ones that throttle.

With the eve of the 12.2 rollout, I’m still suspicious of this being related to site juggling. I’ll post this first and then send the code again. heboland

Hey Hebo,

I was able to download the file without any issues.

Can you try and download it from a different mirror?

ok, do two things

  1. use Google’s DNSs, to do that have a look here:
    http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/network-internet/470090-how-change-dns.html

  2. become root in a terminal with “su -” and then do

rpmdb --rebuilddb
zypper clean -a
zypper ref
zypper patch
zypper ps

be patient, some of those will take a while…

if the “zypper ps” gives “No processes using deleted files found” then run

zypper up

if “zypper ps” gives anything other then please shut down all
applications and log out, shut down and reboot…

then run

zypper up

maybe with those (in that order) we will get lucky!

by the way, i normally use YaST Online Update to do my updates…i
suggest you do the same, or if you want to use zypper do “zypper patch”
it is less likely (than zypper up) to slip in a crippler…

It is double vee, ie “wget”.

Here the connection is attempted via IPv6, which is not surprising it fails completely.

> I forgot to ask what logs to check? heboland?

Well, the obvious candidates would be in “/var/log/zypp/” or “/var/log/YaST2/”, and by looking
at the names and dates of the files, it would be “/var/log/YaST2/y2log”.

That may be the culprit right? So what should he do here? Disable IPv6 in his network settings? Or is there some kind of edit he can make to his zypper configuration files to force it to use IPv4?

Thanks guys for all the replies! I’m writing this reply from my other computer. If this reply gets the white space stripped like my original post, I may get some suggestions to fix that too! I have only IPv4 enabled and I’m using the network manager to connect to the internet. This setting hasn’t changed since the 12.1 install almost a week ago. I think changing the mirror is a approach to fix my problem. I haven’t done that before but I do have some code to try from dd@home. Up until now I have had success using Yast > Software > Online Update. It’s kept this machine up to date. Right now on the other machine, I’m using Online Update to install updates one at a time. I’m probably not young enough to finish that job in this lifetime, but every little bit helps! I don’t have time to experiment with the mirror change now, but I should have time in a few hours. Guess What? heboland.
