Networkmanager log shows usb disk??

I’m wondering why the NetworkManager log file would show an entry whenever an external usb drive is plugged in. It’s obviously HAL related but looking at the various files of hal, udev, syslog shows nothing relevant.

Here’s the entry just after the usual info about the network card:

This is an opensuse 10.3 with final updates system.

Any search here about the log shows nothing but actual network problems.

hmmm…you know 10.3 is no longer supported, right?

by the way, where is that network manager log, my 10.3 doesn’t seem to
have one…

There may be no more updates, but it doesn’t stop one from being curious about some oddity in an otherwise reliable setup.

I missed the capital M, NetworkManager.log is right below /news and above SaX.log in /var/log

someone else running 10.3 will have to answer, because (see below)

ok, i don’t have one so i guess i’m not using network manager…

however, i can guess that HAL is misidentifying the USB drive as a
wireless networking card and handing it off to the networkmanager to
manage…when it can’t it throws errors…

last: if your 10.3 is otherwise reliable and you just have strange
stuff in that log when you plug in the USB drive, then my fix would
be to stop plugging in that drive…

solved!

Yes, the couple of lines in the log about “updating allowed wireless” and then the “WARN nm_dbus…no networks” hints at that I know, and there is only the 1 pci cabled LAN card. I had a look through the /hal and /fdi type stuff to no avail.

Ahh yes, the old ones are the best

exactly!
so often works so easily and completely…
but many won’t consider it an option, why i do not know (well, it
might be an “age thing”…that is, i know when i was younger i was
more willing to tilt at windmills… <http://tinyurl.com/6nb7wr>
