Networkmanager and wireless in 11.4

Hello,

After installing and updating 11.4 the networkmanager disabled my wireless network connection. During the test with the live-CD it worked perfect, after installation it worked, but after updating the software it did not work anymore. This is with networkmanager 0.8.2-9.10.1 (x86_x64). With networkmanager 0.8.2-8.1 (i586) the wireless network interface was working perfect.

Manual configuring (ifup and so) for the wlan0 (wireless interface) and with the graphic interface works fine, after disabling the eth0 with ifdown eth0 and checking the default routing.

Why this posting? I see lot’s of questions regarding the wireless interfaces and drivers for those interfaces, but nothing about the networkmanager.

I think the problem is the network manager, but i’m not capable enough for installing and running previous or newer versions. So a good investigation is to be done, but not by me.

Regards, Henk

BTW: I’m working with gnome, but in KDE the wireless is also not working with networkmanager.

You quote different architectures
networkmanager 0.8.2-9.10.1 (x86_x64). With networkmanager 0.8.2-8.1 (i586)

No, I do not need a 11.4 DVD by Post. Even I can download and burn those things

Regards, Henk

I have to crash for sleep now
But I have not had such an update, maybe it came from one of the repos you have, check the radio buttons in software manager for the versions and switch to the one form oss

I worked all morning trying to get wireless going on OpenSuse 11.4 and was unable to. Eventually I suspected the Gnome Network Manager. I checked via Yast and found version 0.8.2-9.10.1 installed as an upgrade from 0.8.2-8.1. I googled the problem and landed in this thread and decided to downgrade NetworkManager Gnome. Instantly everything worked! (my router is a Linksys WRT54G).

Hey erdaepfel2 can you tell me how to downgrade the network manager the only problem might be I use KDE not Gnome.
I have been having similar problems since upgrading to 11.4. After the up grade the wireless network was fine untill I switched it off then I was unable to switch it on again. When I looked at the network manager icon the wireless network was there but I was unable to select it. I went through the upgrade procedure again and it came back on again but the last time I tried that it didn’t work. The problem must be with the manager as the wireless works fine when its on. It would seem, by the number of posts, that it is a sgnificant problem. Does anyone know if novell are looking in to it? Any other sugestions would be gratefully appreciated.

Try switching to plasmoid-networkmanager
You will have to install it
Then remove the old network icon and add in the plasmoid one

Thanks caf4926, I’ll have to wait a bit as I don’t have ready access to a hard wire for my laptop, thank gooness for community machines. I’ll try that next time I’m home. What’s the chances of a patch for this problem?

I’m not sure how much of a problem it is. I’m OK.
I have seen one other case, to my knowledge.
If you bug report it, the chances get better.

i think you are using Gnome and kde.to make wireless work in Gnome boot into Gnome and right click the Gnome network applet which is in the bottom of the screen.and make a tick on enable wireless(your wireless button should be switched on).in kde you should switch to plasmoid network manager as Carl said.you can install plasmoid manager by Yast-software management-search-plasmoid network you will get a result plasmoid network manager.install it you should uninstall to install plasmoid.after installing plasmoid restart your system to take effects.after the restart click plasmoid and untick enable networking then switch on your wireless button.then click plasmoid and click enable networking now you can make a tick in enable wireless too.that’s all.this is my experience after my one week struggle to make wireless work.
