Networking with Windows

I’m running SUSE 11.3 on a Dell Inspiron 1501. I’m trying to network it with my Windows 7 and XP boxes. I’ve installed Samba, activated the services Samba needs and add myself as a Samba user. My problem is that I can see and access files on the laptop from both of my desktops running Windows, but when I try to access them from the laptop I get a message saying the sever timed out whenever I try to access my workgroup.

Thanks
Dan

Thanks I’ll check it out.

Do you have firewalls enabled on the desktops?

No they are all disabled.

OK, so after looking at the guide everything looks right but I’m still getting the timeout on the workgroup. I tried using Konqueror to access my network and I get the same timeout error when I try to access the workgroup, I can access the desktops directly using there IPs in Konqueror but I can only see the shared files and not open anything.

Go YaST → System → System Services ( Run Level). Make certain that both
nmb and smb are set to start. nmb (nmbd) is needed for name resolution.
Have you created Samba users with smbpasswd? What version of Windows is
running on your other machines? If this and Swerdna’s Howtos do not help,
please post the contents of your /etc/samba/smb.conf. You can use
substitute values for any sensitive information such as public IPs.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I’m so frustrated with Winblows my computers will probably be 100% Linux by the weekend. My stuff I have shared between the 2 Windows boxes stopped working for one user on the XP box but not the others. The only thing that I’ve stuck with Windows for is games and Netflix, I haven’t played a PC game in over 6 months and Netflix isn’t that important.

ow that is a great link!

i think i can get it to work with that guide

something I can understand
