Networking (wired and wireless) in Suse 11.0

I installed Suse 11.0 on my laptop and couldn’t get networking to work.

I tried all the things found in this post: My wireless doesn’t work - a primer on what I should do next - openSUSE Forums

I got the the end of the post and tried deleting eth1 as suggested and rebooting. It errored because it couldn’t connect to the internet via eth0. Which my router shows is connected, and the text below, (I think) shows it connected, but it won’t connect to anywhere.

eth0 Interface doesn’t support scanning.

Any ideas? I should note that it didn’t like the wired connection either time I built it with Suse 11.0. Both wireless and wired worked well with Ssue 10.1 however.

It appears connected wirelessly, a few things to check:-

1 ) ipv6 is off
2 ) firewall is set to external for the device
3 ) encryption matches
4 ) no typo’s in encryption
5 ) correct obeisance to Almighty Tux carried out ( only joking rotfl! )

3 ) encryption matches – Not using any for the public one here on campus so yes,
4 ) no typo’s in encryption – See #3.

A side note, there was a typo in the wired and I have that working now. But since the laptop is for portable I need wireless working and don’t care so much about the wired. Should the wireless light come on? It used to with Suse 10.1. It’s not now. What other method do I have of verifying that it’s on?

Could be the driver you are using. Which are you using iwl or ipw ? try changing the driver or even try compat-wireless

I only find iwl. 10.3 had both. As I recall, I couldn’t find compat-wireless in the repos. I’ll have to check again. Too tired now.

I don’t know if it is in the repos, but there is life outside openSUSE.

That there is but so far, I’ve not found a distro I like as well. I’m not happy with the ms/Novel thing that can come to nothing but bad but. … For my hardware (which isn’t all that weird) Suse just seems to work the best.

Not sure what I did, but the wireless is working now. I know I updated a lot of things, I deleted the wireless connection then rebooted and it worked. I don’t know if the Fn wireless key works or not, but the light telling me the wireless is activated never comes on. I recall reading something about that in a forum somewhere. Not sure if there’s a fix for that or not. It’s rather minor, but I kinda like the indication of working or not with that little light! The important thing is that it’s working now and Suse 11 seems to’ve fixed a lot of things from 10.1. Now do I upgrade my two desktops? I think I’ll wait at least until Christmas break.
