Network Printing Problem

Opensuse 11.4
Hi, not sure what I am doing wrong but i cannot for the life of me get my HP 6380 Printer detected.

The printer is connected to my desktop via a small office network switch. The network appears to be working normally. I am able to access the net and other local network PC’s. I can ping the printers network ip.
I have tried Yast and hp-setup, and cups - but all efforts to configure the printer fail as the network connection is not detected. The configuration tools keep coming up blank.
I have also tried turning off SuSEfirewall2 and Apparmour, but no luck yet.

Any ideas ?

So I always use the hplip utility with my HP printers. I run hp-setup as root (in KDE I do a Alt-F2 then enter kdesu hp-setup) due to needing root authority to install the new printer. You can check to make sure hplip is installed by running YaST / Software / Software Management and search on hplip. Check the Versions Tab to make sure you have the most recent version loaded.

To find HP printers on the network you need to open up a port in the Firewall for this (YaST / Security and Users / Firewall / Allowed Services (on left)) and add the mDNS/Bonjour as a allowed service. If you still can not see your printer, then just go into the manual mode (Select the Network Bullet / Show Advanced Options / Check Manual Discovery AND enter the IP address for your networked HP printer and then just following the prompts. Any network HP printer has a status page you can print that can spit out the present network configuration.

Thank You,

After trying the above many times and not connecting to the printer, I concluded that I had a more fundamental problem. Could it be a Networking problem ? The ip address of the printer seemed to be in a range that was not familiar to me.
IP address 169.254.183.111
Subnet mask 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway 0.0.0.0
I found that I could change the address on the printer and changed it to a Local Net Range 192.168.x.x
with Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0. Gateway I left untouched.
Then I still had to run hp-setup as root for printer to be discovered…kdesu hp-setup
Immediately the printer appeared in the setup dialogue box, and is now working. Yay ! : )

Well I love to hear about success. The IP address 169.254.183.111 does sound like an auto generated one which might occur if your router stopped handing out IP addresses through DHCP. I am not sure of the issue there and you may need to look further into what problem that might cause. If you do have any other issues, just let us know and we will try to help.

Thank You,

The true test of your new configuration is - will it work in reboot.
One week later after rebooting I got error messages when trying to print.

Once again I went Alt > F2 and ran kdesu hp-setup. Finding the device - dialogue box - returned blank.
I went to the manual configuration and entered the IP address that I had installed on the printer - 192.168.x.x.
The printer immediately appeared and was installed as a new printer.

I needed more confirmation that this printer setup was going to work and decided to reboot. Result was positive. With SuSEfirewall2 running the printer worked as required.

Stay tuned ; )

Well taking those last two steps seems to work for me (Firewall setting and manual entry of printer IP). Do let us know if anything changes for you.

Thank You,
