This is one I have not encountered before. I have 2 computers both with openSUSE 11.4. The host machine which has the printer connected to it via usb is updating with tumbleweed. The client printer is a stock 11.4 install with all updates installed. I have both tcp and udp 631 open in my firewall on the host machine. No ports are open on the client machine. I am using a HP Photosmart C6250 which is set up and working on the host machine. On the client machine I have installed the remote printer and can successfully print a test page in yast. When trying to print as a user the print dialog comes up and the printer is listed but instead of saying ‘printer is ready’ it says ‘getting printer information failed’.
Why can I print via yast (root) and not as a regular user. Is this a permission issue or is something else involved?
Ok, this problem is getting stranger. I can print from libreoffice and ocular but not from firefox. I did not have time to check other apps. Any suggestions on what this may be? I will check other apps. This is not happening on the Tumbleweed machine but on the stock 11.4 machine.
This might be a Tumbleweed problem, or a network issue, or an 11.4 issue or a Firefox in 11.4 issue. Many places where the fault might lie. My money is on Firefox, but that’s a big maybe. You could narrow the possibilities down significantly by attaching the printer temporarily to the 11.4 computer and trying to print direct in 11.4 using Firefox and some other 11.4 apps. If you still get the problem with Firefox, then it’s not a network issue and it’s not a Tumbleweed issue.
